Info On Sl-c3000 World Voltage Ac Adapter Specs

Hello,

I have recentlly purchased a new SL-3000 and I think this one is great, I had SL-5500 beforehand I think that 640x480 resolution is really worth the price

Unfortunately my wife put the AC Adapter charger directly to 220 Volts but it was not a World Adapter but was for US 110 Volts, so blew off  

I was planning to use my previuous converter [220=>110 Volts] that I used for charging my previous SL-5500 but now the 110 V US Adapter is not working  

I am planning to use an external adapter and searched this forum for the specs. As far as I can see I just need an adapter that has DC 5.0 V and 1.0 A. Unfortunately I could only find an adaptor for 5.0 V but 0.5 A. I am by no means an electronics expert so I don't know whether this one will damage my new SL-3000 or not. Can someone please tell me if it is OK to use 5.0 V / 0.5 A for charging my SL-3000 ?

I had searched these pages/forum on on https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=C3000_General_Info
I saw that :
  *  Battery & Power
  * 1800 mAH, external charger
  * warning, no reverse polarity protection so be VERY careful if using a non-standard power supply

but on my broken charger charger it reads 1.0 A not 1.8000 mAH so I am a bit confused.

Also the following information written there has left me deeply worried :

As I said, I don't know what is a "reverse polarity protections" and I am further worried for finding a suitable charger that will be ok for my SL-3000

Could someone with electronics background please tell  me exactly which spesi fications are neeed for charging my SL-3000 from 220 Volts ?

- Volts ?
- Ampers ?
- Watts ? [I do not know if watts is relevant here or not]


Or can I use my previous SL-5500's charger for charging my new SL-3000 temporarily for a few times till  I find a new charger according to specs ?

Any directions/help would greatly be appreciated

Hi, what you need is a 5volt 1amp power supply with a positive centre tip on the plug.  5v 500mA will probably not be sufficient, especially if you have the zaurus turned on at the same time, and is not recommended. It is recommended that you get a good quality power supply that is regulated...

BTW, Voltage * Current = Power (Watts) so 5v 1A = 5w power supply

To explain about the battery:
The battery is 1800mAH or 1.8Ah. This means that if you draw a current from it of 1.8Amps it should last for one hour.  

Lack of Reverse polarity protection means that the zaurus does not have protection against the wires in your plug becoming reversed and so the flow of electricity is reversed. This protection can be as simple as a diode but Sharp don't include it because they waste power, take up board room, and are unnecessary in normal usage.

Thanks for your help and explanations, I would be grateful if you can tell me if I can use my old Zaurus's AC charger instead ?

OLD SL-5500 Adapter [Model EA-70]:
100-240 V ~ 50/50 Hz
0.27-0.17A
23-32 VA    13 W
output: 5V==2A

on my broken SL-3000's US adapter it doesn't read VA and/or W values but only reads :
AC 100 V 50/60 Hz 11 VA [I really don't have an idea on what VA means   ]
DC 5.0 V 1.0 A

The difference is 1.0 A => 2.0 A and 23-32VA => 11 VA
Can I use my old charger instead ?

Yes I have read you can use that ac adapter.

In fact I have read that it's a better AC adapter, quite the discussion here:

But yes it will work fine as long as the polarity is correct.

Yes, I heard of other people using that adaptor. The polarity is the same on the plug so that's the main thing.

Okay VA and watts are kind of the same thing... they are both a measure of power. VA = Volts * Amps = Instantaneous power at an instant.  Watts is the Real Power and is equal to Instantaneous power averaged over a time interval, i.e. one second. In any case, those values are only how much it takes from your mains supply to run the adaptor and not how much energy you get for your Zaurus...

The amps indicates the maximum flow of electricity (electrons). This is like the maximum amount of water that comes out of your tap in your sink.  When you open the tap fully the maximum amount of water comes out, you don't get any more (e.g. 2Amps). So if you only need half the water (1A) then there is no problem, the zaurus only takes what it needs.

The voltage is the concern. It is equivalent to the pressure of water in a pipe. Too little and you don't get enough flow of water, i.e. electrons as described before...  Too much and the pipe will burst, or in the case of your zaurus (or your original broken adaptor) it explodes!

I was able to find an adapter that produces exactly 1000 mA and 4.5 Volts and yesterday charged my Zaurus without any problems. It is not 5.0 V but 4.5 is very close to 5 V, so I hope this will not damage my Zaurus in the long run

That charger "should not" damage your Z. The only thing to be aware of is that it may not charge the battery to full capacity....... I have found this using a usb charge cable as the voltage was a bit below 5volts...  There is very little overhead between the full voltage of about 4.2 volts and your 4.5volts for the charging circuit to operate within...  good luck.

Well, such low charge voltage may cause improper operation of charging circuit because
it is 10% out of specs while worse case of voltage tolerances for typical SMPS adapter
are 5%.  In addition, If 4.5V is a measured voltage at light or no load expect it
to drop further under full load.
