Problems Flashing 3.5.3 On A 5500
« on: April 21, 2005, 09:19:13 pm »
Hi, I recently got a hand-me-down 5500 and am trying to get OZ 3.5.3 on it. It currently has v.3.10 of the Sharp ROM on it. I followed the installation instructions to the letter :

o verified MD5 checksums of files
o made sure the files were renamed properly
o formatted the CF card with a FAT16 filesystem
o put the files at the root of the FS
o connected to AC power while flashing

All that happens when I press C+D+reset is that the the amber light goes out, and neither light comes back on. When I replace the battery cover, and reset the switch to the normal operation position, the Z boots up into the same old OS with all data gone (as is to be expected).

Now, I'm using a 128 MB 4X Lexar CF card here - I wondered if anyone else has had trouble with such a card since I can't think of anything else I'm doing wrong. I'd appreciate any help since I can't find anything obvious (or even non-obvious) with Google. Thanks.

HI,

Sometimes I have had a similar problem and found that there are other files on the flash card which cause the problem. It may be worth while checking the cf card contains only the 2 files needed, and no hidden files.

hope that helps.

regards

Kyle

The other thing is the sequence of releasing the buttons.

I have found that if you release the reset button first it seems to work more smoothly.

cheers

I actually took care of that as well - made sure nothing else was on the card except for the two required files.

Hm, that is something to try again - although I'm sure that in the dozen times or so I tried this, I must have released the buttons in that order at least 3-4 times.

The other worrying thing is that the CF cards don't even seem to be recognized in the SHARP ROM - as in they don't get mounted, and I can't see the files on them. If I reboot the machine with the card in the slot, I do get a small CF icon on the Qtopia taskbar with an 'Eject card' option, but that is it. I can't the CF card in the 'Files' tab, or using the file manager.

How did you get the files on the card?
If it was on a windoze system, might be, that the CF is raw formatted i.e. without any partition and thus preventing OZ from "seeing" the files at all, since it is expecting the files in the root directory of the first partition.
Try fdisk /dev/hda and than p, which will show you the partition table of your cf.
If necessary, create a new partition, format it (on the Z) and put the files on again. Than start a new cycle.
