- I've had a 5500 for years now, and have enjoyed it immeasurably. If my Winbloze laptop were only as pleasurable to use! Now it's time for an upgrade.
- I pondered this very question: get a 3000 or a 1000? The clencher for me was actually the hard drive ... I read *numerous* posts on the web how iPods fail after dropping them, just once, because the hard drive goes south. That's an aspect I never considered, but it makes sense that a spinning disc, even an itty bitty one, doesn't deal with with large G forces.
- I've only dropped my Z twice in the last three or more years, but it only takes *one* drop to utterly destroy the hard drive. Solid-state memory doesn't have this drawback. So while I've no *intention* of dropping the new Z, it stands to reason that if I keep it for years (i still have the hp-71b i got in 1984, which still works as good as new), it has a good *chance* of being dropped. I just don't like the odds.
- Since it has both SD and CF, I use the SD slot for an essentially permanent memory upgrade on the 5500, and I see no reason not to do the same on the 1000. SD cards are available in 2GB right now, and larger ones will be available later. It's a lot simpler to just upgrade if I run out of space, and I'm not locked into a "mere" 4GB down the road, because it boots from that big flash area. I merely replace the music on it periodically, which is trivially simple ... just drag and drop. I don't need to nor do I carry any SD cards around except the one that's plugged in.
- It's nifty that they put a standard CF slot inside the 3000, so it would actually be possible to upgrade to a larger HD later, or replace one if it got dropped. I still prefer full solid-state for portable devices. (shrug) I could replace it with the CF like the one guy did, which is a seriously cool idea, but cash is a factor for me, and I simply can't afford to do that.
- So a 1000 it is. It's on order and should arrive next week (happy smile)...
