3.5.3 Issues With Installation And Opie
« on: April 28, 2005, 02:22:18 pm »
I just installed OZ 3.5.3 with the opie-40-24 image and it looks slick.  I am having a few problems that I have not found answers to yet.

I have the common errors about libqte and libqpe (is there an explaination of what exactly is wrong with the installed versions?) and another strange problem.

When I install apps, the package manager occasionally crashes (hangs). I reset the device and when it boots it says bus error and opie will never start again, causing a reflash.

Is there a "Install these first list" for new installations of 3.5.3?

3.5.2 worked great, but I have yet to sucessfully install a single app in this new version.  Mostly massive errors about symlinking failing on my SD card (ext2) and of course lib errors for libs that are installed.

EDIT: I got the SD problem worked out.  I had formatted the card on my Debian Sid box instead of the Z. I reformatted it on the Z and now I can install to it.

I also found the renamed sharp-lib-compat and installed it, although it squawked about failed simlinks again.  It appears in the launcher but clicking on it gives an hourglass for a few seconds then nothing. ????? I got Opera and the Handcom stuff installed, but none of it is much good without OZcompat.

On a side note, Openzaurus and its developers kick *ss. Just thought it needed to be said again.

Here is an odd error that I get almost every time I attempt to install anything.  I even went in and deleted the trailing slash from the configuration and it still does this. Anyone know why?

can't get /media/card/packages//usr/lib/ipkg/info/libsdl-image-1.2-0.control open for read

and....

ipkg_conf_write_status_files: Can't open status file: /media/card/packages//usr/lib/ipkg/status for writing: Read-only file system

How is your card mounted? rw or ro?

Try ipkg from the command line, there are still some niggles with the GUI package manager as you've discovered.

I double checked my fstab and the SD is mounted rw. I have added a root password but that shouldn't matter.  I still can't figure out why sharp-libs-compat doesn't work.  I may try the older oz-compat and see if that works.  I get the same exact error messages whether I do ipkg from the command-line or in Opie.

I flat out LOVE how easily the pim apps sync with Kontact in KDE 3.4, but oddly enough, the write back (to the zaurus) hangs and fails to move data from the desktop pim to the Z.  Any new entries on the Z are sucessfully imported to Kontact though. Nice touch.

It may have been asked before, but why wasn't Konqueror embedded shipped with OZ? It seems strange not to have a browser on my Z, since no browser I have tried will install. Opera installed, but without a working oz-compat it won't run.

ROM size constraints.

With regard to your not being able to open files, it may be worth running fsck on the card. For ext2, I think it's in one of the e2fs*.ipk packages.

I repartitioned and reformatted the card and it made no difference.  I still get this path in the package manager.

Can't open status file
/media/card/packages//usr/lib/ipkg/status : no such file or directory

I get this error even when installing to ram.

I don't get why 2.5.2 worked so well and 3.5.3 doesn't work on my Z at all.  Did that much really change between versions?

I am now trying a different SD card.

Well crap.  My 512 Kingston SD card works after a quick format.  I checked the 1GB card I was using from my debian box and the card is fine. Maybe OZ 3.5.3 just doesn't like 1GB cards or Sandisk.  Anyone else have trouble with this card?

Well at least it is working. OZ 3.5.3 is cool, each release gets better and better. Keep up the good work OZ team.  You have really saved all the abandoned Zaurus users out there.
