Is Trolltech going to release a ready-to-go ROM that we can download and skip the heartache of getting a palmtop to actually be useful?
There are many flavors of ROMS-- for the most part, some work in different areas better than others, but other than besting each other with eye-candy, little is done on improving on each other's functionality.
I'm not a whiz-bang developer, but I like to tinker-- to me, a viable palmtop system should have iron-clad basics like:
Addressbook: one that will sync with a tool or be able to import other formats
GUI sync: like Qtopia
Calculator
Package Manager: one that won't crash every time
So far, I've tried out the Sharp ROMS, Cacko, TheKompany-- some work great and other's waste user time.
When I loaded the latest OpenZaurus 'Opie', the Addressbook works with Qtopia! Great! I cannot load a single new application however, as it complains that qpe-base isn't found.
TheKompany had a great ROM-- damned system would not sync with Qtopia and addressbook wasn't compatible.
I payed out a lot of dough for this stuff, as well as for a never-ending supply of broken stylii (my daughter broke two for me) as well as SD and CF cards & media readers-- it makes you want to step back and decide if 'having it your way' is really worth it.
Any comment on Trolltech's releases?
