Oz 3.5.3 Upgrade, Now Can't Find My Wireless Card!
« on: May 04, 2005, 07:42:05 pm »
Hi,

I jut recently upgraded from OZ 3.5.2 to 3.5.3 on my Zaurus SL-5600, and I reformatted it so that it is clean.  Everything works great, but when I went to sync everything, I found out that, although it detects my AmbiCom WL1100C WIFI Card, it doesn't recognize any wireless connections under networking.  I tried bringing down all my security on my router, but there is still no card under wlan0.    If I try to start wlan0, it just tells me "Starting Interface Failed".  Why is this happening?  Also, wasn't the connection for the wireless card on the old OZ called wifi0?  Thanks.

Matt

No. The hostap drivers (iirc) provide two interfaces to the card - wlan0 should be used, not wifi0.

I can't think of anything to do other than to check that the correct modules have been loaded for your card - check the conf file (though without my Z in front of me I can't tell you where - probably under /etc/hotplug though).

Reflash the Z and insert your Wifi card before rebooting for the first time.  That seems to work for me everytime.  Having it on the cradle the first time also seems to make USB networking come up.  If I don't do this, neither interface seems to ever work.

You shouldn't have to do this though - presumably you both have the same card (I've a linksys card which works fine, without being inserted when you boot for the first time)? If so perhaps you could compare setups to see what's different.

In any case, I'd try rebooting with the card in before you go to the extreme of reflashing.

I tried both rebooting it with the card and then reflashing with the card inserted.  It detects the card just fine, but I cannot start up the wlan0 in the networking window.

Post some info:

'lsmod' with and without the card inserted.

'cardctl info' and 'cardctl status' with the card inserted.

Matt,

For what it is worth. I did a fresh install of OZ 3.5.3/Opie1.2 on my 6000. And I had troubles getting the card (internal) to start.
Initially, I used the recommended IFUP WLAN0 method, but it did nothing. So I used the Opie Network GUI to configure and then start it, which succeeded except for getting a DHCP addr. I brought the card down using IFDOWN WLAN0 (GUI failed to down it).
Since then, I have been successfully using the recommended IFUP WLAN0 & IFDOWN WLAN0 method to start/stop the card. Although I am still trying to obtain a lease via DHCP but I have had little time as of late.

Hope this helps
JawZ

it's prism 2.5 based card - try manually load module hostap_cs after insert. If it works then You have to add that card to /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf and send that info to us.

How do I manually load it?

I tried a modprobe, and all I got was a series of errors that ended with the module not being loaded.  I got a whole lot of

Are you sure you don't get the kernel "WARNING" at bootup? Are you sure your initrd and kernel have both been flashed?

Actually, I DO get that warning message!  It halts on boot for about a minute saying that the kernel versions don't match.  But I've reflashed it several times following instructions, why wouldn't the kernel reflash as well?

Possible issues: filename wrong, md5sum wrong, windows hiding extensions, card broken, etc.

I think it's very unfair to request support for your problems while ignoring my big fat WARNING
