Need A Bit Of Advise Concerning The Sharp Rom
« on: May 05, 2005, 01:14:03 pm »
To all of you who are using the Sharp 3.1? ROM ...

I have a Collie (5500) currently running OpenZaurus 3.5.3 with Opie, and was wondering if any of you have gotten the following things to work under the Sharp ROM:

1) Connect to WiFi hotspots (including those using DHCP)

2) an email client that does POP and IMAP using SSL authentication

3) OpenSSH (Need to connect to a server using advanced options like port forwarding/tunneling)

4) Some kind of screen rotation applet to toggle the screens orientation (landscape vs portrait)

5) Keypebble VNC (or a similar VNC client)

6) VoIP telephony (SIP client like Kphone / KPPI)

7) Wellenreiter

8) an app called "Shopper" (It may sound stupid, but this is a great little shopping list application that I just can't do without when I go to the grocery store)

9) App to play MP3's (XMMS maybe?)

There appears to be a decent amount of stuff available for OZ, and Opie looks really nice, but I have had a lot of trouble getting a few things to work right on it. DHCP is the biggest one, and I can not seem to get sound out of KPhone or XMMS, yet the OS plays stereo sounds when I plug or unplug a CF card, and IRDA will not talk to my cell phone, when it did under the Sharp ROM.

I hate to just dump OZ and Opie, but I really need to get my Z working, and I remember the short while I had the Sharp ROM installed, some things seemed to just work, I just wasn't sure I could get the apps I need.

Being a UNIX geek, I love fooling around with Linux, but I really do need to get my Zaurus working for me, so I am trying to find the "best" ROM for the job.

Thanks,
John

I don't have an answer to all your questions and I now only use my 5000D sporadically, but I have used it a lot in the past and wifi works, dhcp works, no problem in hot spots. ssh also works and I used briefly a shopping app (from the old Zaurus software index), it might have been shopper but I don't remember. I've had trouble with Wellenreiter but Kismet works fine (with the Qt GUI also). I tried a very early screen rotation app and it worked but had some issues, I don't remember and it was a long time ago, it might have got better. The other questions, I don't know.

Thanks for your response, Felipe.

Just out of curiosity, what model did you replace your collie with, if any?

Cheers,
John
