C700 and cacko-rom
« on: January 22, 2004, 08:51:47 am »
Hi all,
i just flashed my Z from the sharp 1.2 to the cacko rom. i\'m very impressed with the localisation and all the \"visual\" improvements.

but...i\'m very disapointed with the performance of the cacko rom.
starting any applications takes much longer then with the sharp rom (at
least it feels like that).

i recognized that the cacko-rom \"fast-loads\" a lot of apps. so i uncheck
them to free up most of the memory. after a fresh reboot, the
system-info-applet shows
12MB used
200kB buffers
18MB cached  <--
500k free

why is all the memory cached ? i can\'t remember the sharp-rom
doing this...

any ideas ?

I think the cache is a Linux thing. The Sharp ROM does it too.

Just consider it \"free\" space. The OS caches lots of data in case you use it again. It speeds things up. The cached data will be dumped from memory if and when you need the memory.

So cached RAM = free RAM.

At least, that is what I have read and have been told.

12MB used is very little I think!   I almost always show 16 MB used. I have a 760 though, but I don\'t think that makes a lot of difference.

On another note, I have heard a lot of people say the new Cacko ROM is slower than previous ones. I guess it has  LOT of cool features that somehow slow it down, though I can\'t understand how things that are not loaded in RAM would slow it down. Not sure.

There are other kernels out there that can really speed up your 700 though. Do some looking for the \"Sukoshi\" kernel. It ditches some of the \"slow downs\" built into the Sharp kernel for the C700 that supposedly make it more stable.

clofland, thanks for your answer...
about the kernel.... i\'m already using sukoshis kernel

i feel the \"slowness\" has something to do with networking. once the network
was up (usb or wifi) the Z turns to be realy slow (sometimes it takes up to 60seconds
or more to CLOSE an application).
also sometimes when connecting the usb cable, the qt-sync app just popsup even tough
i havent used anyting else then putty to ssh into my z...

guess i need to do some more serious \"research\"....

question about the sukoshi kernel.....
i can find the zImage.bin of the http://laurent.lieben.free.fr/zaurus_kernel/ site, but what intrid.bin goes with it?
