Just wanted to have a single place where everyone can put in which USB devices and peripherals work on the C1000/3000 thru the USB Host port...

since it seems the USB host port on the C series is different than the 6000L (in terms of power and chip controllers) I thought, instead of following the 6000 thread, why not have a dedicated list for the C series.

Theres already been some devices listed as working in This Thread
Plus I am sure Kahm will be able to list a multitude of devices which he has been able to get working on his C3000 (including of all things - a CD Burner)

I just got a Archos ARCDrive 20GB HDD today and will test it out tonight.
So that should be another positive (or negative).
For now my Sandisk 512MB USB Stick works fine on the C1000 (unpowered)

Edit : please mention if the device is powered or unpowered (external)

I just took a quick look at Intel PXA27X documentation, and it doesn't appear that PXA27X is using any +5V lines. I think since pretty much everything else can work on lower voltage (I wish they designed USB to use +3.3V instead of +5V), Sharp might use some +5V charge pump to power up USB host ports. Many of them are rated @ 100mA max, so that can explain why C1K/C3K can't drive many power-hungry USB peripherials which draw power from USB bus.

Back to your topic, here's my short experience with C1K and USB devices:
- USB flash drive, USB-to-Ethernet adapter works.
- USB Prism3-based 802.11b wi-fi card requires external power supply.
- USB ZyDAS 1211-based 802.11g wi-fi card requires external power supply.

The Archos ArcDrive 20GB disk works with my C1000 (needs power) thru my Belkin 7 port USB Hub (powered).

If I connect it unpowered directly to the Zaurus - the zaurus hangs up.

Great thing, the Archos comes with two cables with Mini A adapter on one end - one shorter than than the iRiver cable (great) plus another is 1 1/2 ft long).

Here's a pic of my Archos drive with the Belkin USB hub.

On my C1000, various CF and SD flash memory cards up to 1 GB (Sandisk, Lexar, Transcend) attached through a USB adapter all worked unpowered. An Easydisk 256 MB USB flash drive and USB keyboard also worked unpowered.

My Hitachi 4GB microdrive in a CF/USB adapter locked up the Z requiring a reboot, though it worked fine in the CF slot and with a powered USB hub (Radio Shack).

Well, I haven't actually tried many USB devices on the Z. Most notably I use the Microsoft Intellieye v1.0 mouse (unpowered), off-brand Playstation2 USB keyboard (unpowered), and a CF reader with a variety of CF type 1 flash ram cards (Unpowered) simultaneously, all through an unpowered Radio Shack portable hub. That seems to be a fair bit to use all at once, considering the power limitations.

The two main powered devices I use are an RCA Lyra 40gb MP3 player/HD, and an Archos MiniCDRW2 CD-RW drive.

I did plug in my USB dlink Bluetooth adapter, but it has no drivers and seemed to make other stuff on my hub stop working until I re-plugged them in. I'm going to guess it needs to be powered. I've got a couple of PCi USB 802.11b wireless cards that I haven't tried yet either, but I don't think they work under linux at all.

Prism-based USB dongles work with prism2_usb driver from linux-wlan-ng project. It should also work with wi driver under OpenBSD, but I didn;t try. ZyDAS ZD1211 is a different story, it does have a linux driver, but it's crap. No support under OpenBSD at all.

Thanks for your cool pics.  Maybe I will think of getting this Archo HDD or the like once my C1000 arrives.    I just wonder if you can actually power it up (with its own adapter) and then connect it directly to your C1000 without the hub.  It would be great if that is possible, such that the usb accessories, including this HDD, will practically serve as the "docking" parts for the zaurus.  

One more stupid question: does the powered hub function as well without the power source?

Still keep thinking hard of "power" solutions.

Would like to try using my little Targus travel-size optical mouse with my C3000. However it has the standard USB A connector at the end of the cable.

Also, I have one of those little retractable IOGear travel USB cables with a standard USB A on one end and a mini-B on the other end.

Went to store(s) today to see about getting a USB connector (female?) to connect my mouse cable to the travel cable and then plug the mini-B into my Z.....Couldn't find anything.

So, is there either:

1) a little USB connector to connect the two together or

2) a small USB hub I should get to go between the mouse and my Z

UPDATE: Surfed around and found the following little/cheap gender changer...

Nice try, but no go. To get USB Host working on the Z (where you can plug USB devices into the Zaurus) you must have a "Mini-A" connector. It is electrically different than the Mini-B. The system doesn't know to set the port to Host mode if you don't plug in using a Mini-A. You need a Mini-A adapter, like the I-River cables mentioned elsewhere, in order to use the USB.

Sadly, no - without powering the USB hub, the Archos doesn't come alive. At least the Zaurus doesn't hang up like it does when the Archos is connected directly to the Zaurus.

There is an optional AC adpter for the Archos drive, but I dont have that (didn't buy it). But my guess is with its own power it will work just fine on the Zaurus directly.

Thanks, nilch.  Just a wild thought: printing via usb will surely be great, although drivers are always an issue.  

I hope I will be able to add to the list once I start playing with my C1000.

It's a mini USB hub that's powered by rechargable batteries.
It would be pretty sweet if you could plug in a power brick to the hub to charge the batteries without taking the batteries out. I can't tell from the web page though.

I'll probably pick one up when I get my Zaurus unless I find a better solution.

Hey,

I finally can lay my hands on a C1000.  The finishing is just darn gorgeous and has a serious metal build appearance.  I am so glad that the usb host capability makes it a genuine laptop replacement.

For testing usb things, my very first attempt is to connect a usb optical mouse.  I used a Logitech M-BJ58 and it just takes less than one minute to get it to work.  But there is a problem.  It seems the screen cannot refresh quickly enough to catch up with the mouse cursor.  As a result a lot of after images are left along  the cursor path.  Here is a screenshot of what happened when I flick the mouse over the clock face.  Actually the problem is more serious in Hancom Word, in which the program responds veyr slowly with many rapid cursor movements.

What would give rise to this: Z's screen?  The usb cable?  Or the mouse?  Does it happen to other mice as well (only got one mouse to test)?  Thanks!
