Other Os For Slc 3000
« on: May 12, 2005, 01:27:50 am »
I recently bought the Sharp Zaurus SLC3000 pda with the Linx OS.  I bought it because I need a pda that has a built-in keyboard and added storage, both of which the SLC3000 has.  I also need one that has a good tasks/calendar/contacts program that I can sync back and forth from my host pc.  Unfortunately, the sync capability from my windows Outlook program (where my PIM data is stored on my host computer) to this device through Intelisync is terrible, to say the least.
Additionally, I am unfamiliar with the Linx OS and how it works;  I have had success only using the windows ce/pocket pc environment.  I thought I could convert easily, plus hoped the PIM program on the SLC3000 was more conducive to my needs of being able to sync my contacts, tasks and calendar info back and forth.  Unfortunately, I am not able to do this -- and having a hard time generally with this unit.  I was wondering if anyone out there knows if I can add the pocket pc OS to this unit -- maybe partitioning an area and then loading the pocket pc OS in the new partitioned space?  If this can be done, does anyone know how this is done (or where I can go to find out) and where I can find the OS software for pocketpc?  Any and all help is greatly welcomed and appreciated.  I am very frustrated by it all.

I'm new to the Zaurii as well, but I believe that Linux is the only OS that is currently capable of supporting the C3k's ARM architecture.  (However I could be wrong on this one...)

I've heard of a product called VMware that will supposedly allow you to create a Windows virtual machine on a Linux box, but I don't know if it'll work for the Zaurus. I've also heard of a Pocket PC emulator for the Zaurus called QPose, so that may be what you're looking for.

I know that linux  may seem a little daunting at first, but I would recommend checking out a few FAQs or reading through a tutorial before giving up on the system. Who knows - you may end up preferring linux over Windows!

Anyway, I hope this helps.

to Jacknife:
I appreciate your quick response.  I checked the sites of the two you mentioned in your reponse, but they don't seem to be applicable to the SLC3000 -- only the SL5500.  Curiously, therefore,   if all else fails and I am unable to convert this operating system to a windows environment, can you recommend a better tasks/calendar/contacts program you could recommend for the 3000 -- one that I can successfully sync back and forth between my Outlook and the 3000 unit?

Since the SL-C3000 is so new, it'll be a little difficult finding software for your exact model.  However, I've found that some of the programs out there for the older Zaruii will sometimes work on the C3k - and some other times they just need a little tweaking to make them work.

Unfortunately I've never owned a PDA and I'm new to the Zaurii - so I wouldn't know what to recommend for that type of stuff.  I spend the majority of my time within the terminal/console of my SL-C3000 and typically only use the GUI to surf the web. (I know, I'm boring.)

One of the more experienced users will probably post some recommendations tomorrow, or later today.  Hopefully they'll have the answers that you're looking for.  Good luck!

Hi Jacknife:

You mentioned something about tweaking the software from other models to get them to work with the SLC3000.  What do you ususally have to do?

Also, I bought the Socket Low Power WLAN CF card in order to get wireless internet on my SLC3000.  Somehow, I am unable to successfully get this to work.  I plug the card in the unit, but nothing -- not even the little globe icon I should see at the bottom of the unit's screen.  Any ideas on how I can get this to work?

Also, I have a SierraWireless aircard that I have used with my pocket pc in order to get internet anywhere (just like I can from my desktop computer).  I can't get it to work on the SLC3000.  Any ideas here?

as a great PIM, just try the KDE/PI PIM suite :

it works just perfect with my C3000! the synchronization process is less easy than ActiveSync's Outlook one but at least it works
