Sl-c3000 Rom Flashing Procedure?
« on: May 19, 2005, 03:54:30 am »
I haven't been able to find a definitive guide for flashing a SL-C3000 ROM for cacko or some other custom ROM..  and I was hoping someone out there who has done this procedure can give me some pointers..  I bricked my SL-5000D awhile back, and I want to have all the information I can before I do something to this..  can I use a SD card or does it have to be on CF?  Anyone have any other useful information.. links to a guide that I might have missed maybe?  Thanks in advance..

the procedure is described in the readme File, here, the card has to be FAT

To install copy all files to a CF or SD card, insert into the Zaurus and follow these steps.

1. Remove power and battery.

2. Reconnect power and battery and ensure the battery door switch is in the ON position (closed).

3. Hold down the OK button and power on.

4. Select option 4 from the Japanese menu then select either SD or CF from the next menu. You will then be prompted to confirm - hit Y.

The ROM will then install then you MUST do the following....

As soon as the install has completed re-enter the OK menu and select option 3, then 1. This will erase the user portion of the flash and hdd and extract the rest of the ROM. This will be encorporated into the user install process later.

Thanks, I've read this and I've still got a few questions.. and the english manual from TRIsoft.. and I've still got a few other questions..

a) do the cacko files need to be in the root of the FAT16 partitioned media.. or in Backup_Files?

can a NAND backup of my existing ROM be done from the main QPE UI.. or do I need to do one from the reset menu.. the TRIsoft manual was sort of unclear about this with the C3000..

Just installed Cacko.

Followed the instructions by Orange, and the web site. Thanks Orange. Like you Jose I was unsure and afraid to break my expensive toy. I decided to be brave. Installed the Japanese rom 1.11 first. Then Cacko. The files need to be in the root directory of the CF or SD card, do not put them in any folder.

I had a bit of a problem entering the ok menu to reset after the installation. Once I got that done everything work well. Except when I restored my back up. My zaurus would not suspend when I closed the lid and it did not shut off when I pressed the power button. I decided to perform the last step again, reset, and forget about my back up.

Everything is running great. What a difference! Seems to run much faster as well. Thanks to everyone involved with the project!

Now I need to reinstall all my applications and syncronize with my notebook to get my calendar and contacts back.

Please refer to the FAQ about clearing ROMs (on the OESF FAQs). Previous backups (Sharp ROMs) are not compatible with the ROM. You need to clear the unit again, sync your PIM data to restore and copy back files for the other parts of the backups.

Reason...

The backup contains user partition information which links back to specific executables in the Read Only partition of the ROM. If you restore a backup the home partition get cleared and the links for the Sharp ROM are restored, therefore a LOT of the ROM becomes inaccessible and will not function correctly.

For example..

1. apm will not work.. hence suspend won't work.
2. Fonts will go awry.
3. Input methods won't work.
4. Links to Bluez modules will not be present... No Bluetooth!

etc. etc.

Not an exhaustive list. Just an indication of some of the broken things.. Please read the FAQ for more detailed information but have fun with the new ROM.
