Some Nagging Problems!
« on: May 21, 2005, 09:01:53 am »
I've had my Zaurus for a while now, been using it for scheduling and for music on the go.  I love it, but have experienced some problems along the way :

1. The Sharp will sometimes shut down after I turn it on or enter the password to access it (after turning it on).  Is this a bug in the standard stock ROM that I'm using?  Currently, its running :

Otopia
Version : 1.5.4
Built on : Oct 28 2004

Linux kernel
Version : 2.4.20

Model : SL-C3000
ROM version : 1.01 JP

2. The PDA runs poorly sometimes, slow when booting up, slow when selecting different options.  Is this to do with the stock ROM?  Should I be patching the current one with something?

3. Movie player doesn't play AVI files.  I would like to play AVI files because I have educational videos that I would like to watch and listen to.

4. Music player doesn't play WAV files.

5. I've done the language conversion to view the menus in English but retain the Japanese fonts.  I've found that I don't really use the Japanese software that much.  If this is the case, I would like to upgrade the ROM to something that would allow me to run my current applications and more.

Many thanks.  I love the PDA but would like to use it a lot more than just a scheduler and music player.  I'm quite willing to replace the ROM if it means better performance and greater use.

I was about to say: just follow the instructions on the site and then realised that you might not be able to read Japanese

so here is a summary:

Put card_update_3000111.exe onto a Windows machine (you got one of those right?) and run it to extract the files. (it's a self extracting zip file).

Then copy all the extracted files to a SD or CF card. (if your windows box has no card reader, then put the memory card into your Z and connect it via USB cable and switch it to share your card instead of your hdd so you can transfer the files directly to the card) Make sure you put the files into the card's root directory, ie don't put them into any folder and don't copy the folder they were in.

The following files should be on the root of your memory card:
  ・initrd.bin(about 4,337KB)
  ・zImage.bin(about 1,264KB)
  ・mversion.bin(about 16KB)
  ・updater.sh(about 7KB)
  ・hdimage1.tgz(about 19,734KB)

Turn your Z off. Unlock the battery compartment and take it out for about 60 seconds. Put it back in and use a pen to push the "reset" switch inside. Now put the lid back on and make sure to lock it again.

Now make sure your Z is plugged in to the AC. You don't want to be on battery power and have your Z run out of juice in the middle of the update process. (you can kiss your Z goodbye if that happens). Also make sure your card with the update file is inserted.

The charge indicator should be orange now. Press the On button to turn your Z on while pressing the OK button on the back.

You should see the maintenance menu and select option 4 to update the rom. Select either 1. CF or 2. SD depending where your update files are. Confirm the update by selecting Y. Wait about 5 minutes after which your Z should reboot. You're done. You should have 1.11 JP ROM now.

Hi,

I don't have a card, can I copy the ROM straight onto the internal HD?

I couldn't see the maintenance menu.

I am not sure about that. I updated it when it was still in Japanese and then I converted it to english after the update, but I believe it will leave your settings alone and update some libraries.
