Hi Ludwig. I understand that modifying batteries is taking up too much of your time. I was wondering if you would be interested in selling (at a little more than the original cost) kits of 1 Nokia 1800mAh battery, 1 NTC with 10k,  a heatshrink tube and maybe copper tape if it is something that can easily be mailed (i'm guessing it can't), and of course no guarantee that it will work.

Received mine yesterday, charged it overnight, seems to work well. Nice to have an even slimmer Zaurus. Thanks, Ludwig!

Hi ludwig,

Is the battery suppose to reach 100% after charging? I've tried for one day but after charging, ie the yellow LED goes off, I unplug the AC adapter and the battery level is only 70~75%.

Is this normal?

Hi Snappy!

That doesn't sound good...
Which ROM do you use? Is it a battery with gold pins?

I am using the latest Hentges rom 3.5.3 oz. The battery is the one you sent me.

I think I will do a timed battery test later. ie, I'll run the collie without apm switching to suspend, with frontlight on at minimal etc, perhaps play mp3 to get a mileage on the battery.

To be fair, if the mileage is higher than the standard battery, despite erratic battery levels, I can live with it, since battery level detection has never been a strength of the collie.  I just hope it does not post a lower usage time!

Here's the results of 2~3 tests:

Collie does not last more than 2 hours, running with frontlight. I tried different levels of the frontlight, but they show more or less same amount of runtime.

Each test cycle starts after the battery is fully recharged to 100% and the amber/orange charging light turns off by itself. The battery level consistently drops to 70+% within 1 min.

After half hour, it drops to somewhere in the 40~50% region. Towards 1.5hrs, it is around 10% and shortly after, it displays warning, with < 5% battery life.

ORIGINAL SHARP BATTERY TEST

I am testing out the original battery from SHARP right now. After one hour,  it is in the 80% range. Will update more later.

Note that I am not running any MP3 or intensive apps at all. I only have opie-reader running passively. I am not reading it, so there is no scrolling or reading of SD/CF card data at all.

Will retest the hi-cap battery again later. Does not bode well ... is the 1800mAh cell old or used? I cannot understand why it drops to 70+% within a min of charging. Ludwig, any ideas?

ok, to be fair to ludwig and the hi-cap battery, I measured the voltage of the battery with a multi-meter tester and it read 4.0v  ... that is quite *above* the 3.7v specifications of the battery, while the original SHARP battery read 4.2v when it is at 75% in hentges rom.

Is the battery level for the oz3.5.3/hentges rom drastically confused?

EDIT:
Also, I read somewhere that the backup battery for some collie is flat or old, so it tends to drain the main battery under normal operations, causing lower than usual battery life. Is this true?

Possibly, you probably want to ntoe down the voltages which it reports (does the collie have sysfs?) and then work from there (possibly by looking in the kernel).

I'm not sure what changes have been made to the power management code in the OZ 2.4.18 kernel compared to the standard Sharp kernel.

Drop me a line, or start a new thread and I'll see if I can help you out,
