Taskbar Light Applet For Cxks?
« on: June 07, 2005, 01:58:34 pm »
Anyone know of an ipk that will put an icon in the taskbar/tooltray that will alllow the CxKs to turn the backlight on and off? Or at least off, with a screen tap or button push turning it back on?

Thanks,

gdog

I would also be interested in this. I use the Zaurus for long periods in low light conditions (reading in the dark). It would be nice if it was possible to reduce the brightness level of the backlight beyond the lowest setting, which seems to strain my eyes while reading. It would be great to have an app to contol these variables.

Cacko Combined Battery/Overclock applet for PXA270 models will do what you want (although to turn the lcd off takes 2 clicks)

Get it from here or wait till Cacko CxK comes out (should be real soon now )

Stu can it be installed into the Sharp ROM then? Sounds like it but just want to be sure.

Oh, and are we talking about both 3 and 1 K ROMs here?

BTW I didn't see a reference to it at the link you provided.

FWIW my use of it would be to turn off the light without having to shut the cover, or if I had the display rightside up over the keyboard, being able to shutoff the backlight in that configuration.

Thanks,

gdog

Gdog,

yep works with the stock Sharp rom on the C1K, don't know about the C3k as I don't have one unfortunately (my wife reckons one zaurus is enough )

This will do what you want. When you tap the icon a little window opens up with a battery indicator and a sliding scale for the brightness. There are also 2 buttons, the top one opens the Sharp battery/brightness appp and the second one turns off the lcd - doesn't matter which way your screen is facing. To turn the lcd back on use the power button on the front of the unit (note sometimes I have to do this twice, the first time the lcd turns on then off right away, the second time it stays on. This only happens sometimes, so it possible I'm holding the power button too long and actually trun the unit off)

maslovsky,
Nice site. Looks like you like to write code. What turns the lcd back on when desired?

Thanks,

Stu,
This is this link that your original "here" links to [a href=\"http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/c3000/]http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/c3000/

but I don't see anything there resembling a lightswitch applet. Were you by chance referring to the same one that maslovsky has kindly provided?

Thanks,

gdog

Yep, that is the link I sent you to and said to get the "Cacko Combined Battery/Overclock applet for PXA270 models" which is a link on the bottom of the page. It gives you qtopia-combinedbatteryapplet_1.0.5_arm.ipk. (the direct download link is [a href=\"http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/c3000/qtopia-combinedbatteryapplet_1.0.5_arm.ipk]http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/c3000/qtopia-...t_1.0.5_arm.ipk , but wasn't sure if I should directly link to it). The combinedbatteryapplet combines the brightness applet that Anton linked to with the battery applet (you will need tetsu's 18A kernel to get the battery applet working).

If you don't have testsu's kernel or you don't want a combined brightness/battery applet then use the applet that Anton linked to - he wrote/ported them both so they should do the same thing.

Stu,
Downloaded and began using maslovsky's lightswitch applet and it works great. I'm still on the Zaurus ROM.

My problem at the moment seems to be the dreaded EA-72/charging circuit murder of my Z. At least those are the symptoms as I understand them.  I made a post and am awaiting an answer. Hate to do without my C1K and can't just use it when I'm next to an outlet.....

Regards,

gdog

not exactly what you asked for, but you can use keyhelper to turn it off with a keypress or combination of your choice -- i use the Check (hold Mail) key -- and back on with cancel

if you use it to adust brightness watch out for the bug where it later switches the backlight off by itself but leaves the display active.  it can be turned back on with the hardware brightness keys

Let me repeat what carbonfreeze above said:

IF YOU INSTALL THIS COMBINED BATTERY APPLET ON THE SHARP ROM ON C3000
YOUR SYSTEM WILL FAIL TO REBOOT.

I had this happen to me.  The symptom is that the Japanese "wait a few minutes..." graphic
comes up, then it flashes to a black text screen for an instant, then back to "wait a few minutes..."
and does this endlessly.  I didn't know what caused it since I had installed the bad battery applet
some time ago, before doing a reboot.

I was able to recover without doing a full restore, by removing the power and battery,
holding down "D" and "B" keys, reinserting battery, pressing the power button if it hadn't
already come on, and keeping the keys down until I started seeing text messages
from init.  (This process is flakey and sometimes you have to do it several times until
you get text prompts.)  Then login at the login prompt, as root.  Then you can mount /hdd2,
cd to /hdd2/QtPalmtop/plubins/applets/, and remove
the libcombbatteryapplet.so.1.0.0 file and the symlinks to it.  Then estore the symlinks from there to /hdd1/usr/QtPalmtop.rom/plugins/applets/libbatteryapplet.so.1.0.0, the original Sharp ROM battery applet .

This made the system able to boot again.

i dont see the point of the light applet...which i have an ipk working on a c1000 or a c3100.

all you need to do is FN+3 or 4 to raise or lower brightness.

That was my first thought too, but he wants to turn the backlight off. The FN+3 only brings the backlight down to minimum, not off.
