Best Rom For Sl5500
« on: June 20, 2005, 10:27:42 am »
I have an SL-C860 flashed with pdaxrom RC10 and xfce4 with which I am delighted.

But, I also have a SL-5500 which is perfectly serviceable. I would like to get that back into a working state.

There is no sign of pdaxrom for the 5500 any time soon, so which ROM is the best one.

I want to do PIM actions (ko/pi etc), simple documents, email and web browsing.
I also want some mp3s and jpeg to look through.

So, who thinks which ROM is great and which is not worth the trouble.

Thanks
Andrew

That's the main problem. In search of ideal ROM I've made my own :-). It has base and kernel from Cacko Hybrid ROM and Qtopia from TKC Rom. I can upload it somewhere if there will be interest.

You can try for yourself. Where Can I upload it to you?
It has kernel from cacko-hybrid rom, patched to allow
SE T610 works through IrDA and also base rom is from hybrid
added ssh server and some other utils and as GUI is used
Qtopia from TKC-rom 2.0 alpha. I changed calc for neocalc.
You can install ROM In RAM (kernel 32-30) or on SD card
or on CF card (but you have to have two CF's 1st FAT 2nd ext2fs)
You have classicall installer interface from 3.13 ROM but you have also
ipkg-new. I have working BlueZ stack in it (will compile into ROM soon:-)
Ask what you want to know

I have a 5500 Im using TKC v1 on it with the Cacko kernel patch for async SD cards and power management.  This makes the SD port fly and also gives a much better idea of what the battery is doing. (Not 80% to Flat in 2seconds).  Opera and the Qtopia/opie apps give you a cacko feel to the TKC ROM.
All the above is available on the ZUG downloads

I downloaded the hentges ROM with openzaurus 3.5.3.   The kernel had the same problem that openz 3.5.3 had at first, with suspend happening in weird places.  I simply  installed the hentges ROM (with full opie cardfs option) and replaced the hentges kernel with the updated openz 3.5.3 kernel that came out on 6/30.

It is awesome...all of the great features of openzaurus with most opie software pre-installed.   After many hours of trying to get opie packages to install right, Hentges really saves time.

Also, the cardfs functionality is excellent.  It puts /home/root on your SD or CF card and stores the packages there.   Since I use the 64-0 kernel on the SL-5500, this means that I cannot lose data since it is all in the rom or on the SD/CF card.

It is absolutely awesome.   Hentges did a great job. -> http://www.hentges.net/

Sadly, I am still selling my zaurus, since the battery life is blah.

FYI: The new RC found here: [a href=\"http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/]http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/[/url] ships with the new kernel.
