TreeExplorer is cool, I\'d like to hack on it... seems to be closed source though.

According to the application\'s webpage, the author plans to release the source.  However, he/she claims that it can not be released under the GPL, due to the fact that it was developed using the commercial QT SDK.

I know that you cannot develop commercial applications with the GPL SDK, but can you develop GPL apps with the commercial SDK?  Does anyone have a link to a qualified source (trolltech) that clarifies this matter?  I tried searching, but found nothing.

If you go to the author\'s home page you\'ll find his/her Treexplorer-Plus which has an integrated text editor and image viewer. The text editor seems to work pretty well, however it doesn\'t open files it doesn\'t recognize (Midnight Commander is still my favorite  ). The Home page for the Plus version is here -] http://hpcgi2.nifty.com/taku2001/zau/texpl...rerqt_p/top.cgi

The \"Plus\" version is apparently a time-limited beta (expired on Jan 31st here). I went back to the non-plus version for now since there doesn\'t seem to be a way to even buy the plus version yet. Its a great application though!

YES and NO, it is time-limited but the site now has a new version that you can download. The warning message is unfortunately only in Japanese tells you to go and download a new version - this version will probably do the same thing at the end of Feb I guess.

It\'s not presently for sale (and I can\'t see anything on the site that suggests that it will ever be), but I assume the time-limit is to get users to move to the newer beta version and stop bug reports about old versions. I\'ve seen this done with other Japanese open-source software.

Unfortunately it is for sale. You can find it mentioned at the end of the Plu+ web page:
\"..Tree!Explorer QT Plus+ is shareware (JPY 1,250). It is necessary to carry out license registration using all functions... \"

Yep the text editor looks cool with tabs and all!  1,250 yen is some thing like 10USD.

I hope the author goes to supporting Paypal. If the rough edges of the beta are worked out, it seems well worth it.
