Mobile Routing Aodv On Sl-6000l?
« on: July 05, 2005, 01:15:49 am »
Has anyone successfully installed and tested AODV (or similar) mobile routing protocols on the SL-6000L?

As I see it we are only ONE step away from a killer handheld if we can get mobile wifi on this device ( now that there is a  high concentration of access points in most cities.)

It would be amazing to be able to contiuously stay connected, at wifi bit rates, using VoIP and chat software...

Would be interested in hearing from anyone who's tried it... or has thoughts on how to make this a reality.

Thanks in advance.

Does this not require other people to also be running AODV?

This sounds interesting. I was looking at ZeroConf ad-hoc networking a while back. I'd be interested to hear about it if you make any progress.

As far as I understand these all suffer from the same problem - they require a critical mass of users to make it worthwhile trying to use them.

Yes, all participants in the ad-hoc network would need to run AODV. Provided that one (or more) of these nodes are withn range of an AODV peer that has Internet connectivity, all would be able to reach the Internet.

You are correct about the "critical mass" issue, though thankfully not all AODV participants would need to have Zaurii as the software is available for many platforms.

A good starting point for making progress on this might be to gather a group of Zaurus users together, say at an upcoming event, or at a ZUG. This could serve as a debugging session for us, and as an educational tool for non-Zaurus folks.

Anyone know of any upcoming gatherings where we could try this out? Or alternatively is there a ZUG that meets with some frequency that would be willing to do some research?

I haven't tried it yet, but OLSR package is available for Zaurus and it works fine in our campus mobile ad-hoc multihop network.
