why does this insist on executing on powerup of my 3100, any ideas?

Do you mean after reboot or suspend?

after reboot, this is normal, every Zaurus ask corect time after reboot
with the 3100 you have a red bar that is more "error related" but it is normal

first zaurii doesn't retain correct time/date after reboot, then you had to reinsert them
