try with
mplayer -vm -x 640 -y 480
but the problem is that it leaves a blank screen after playback

kino2 will leave the screen in that fashion until he gets the new release out (hopefully). In this respect, for now, I've found that zplayer will correctly do a screen refresh.
I use zplayer for my videos, and kino2 for my audio (so far, until the new versions come out)
