« on: July 14, 2005, 07:45:29 am »
Hi,

Since, I'm not using the Document tab, is there a way to hide it from view altogether?

No, that turns off the document tab window contents but still leaves the tab visible, unfortunately.

Code: [Select]
ipkg remove opie-doctab
I don't know if this will help, and frankly haven't had the courage to try it.

Coward ;-)

Oh well. Despite the massive abuse of beer i've tried it.

Result:
It doesn't disable the doctab. Did a restart of opie, resetted the whole thing, nada.

Are the any other sideeffects?
Don't know. Reinstalled it right away.

In this case I don't know what to tell you. . . I too wish the DocTab would go away, or even better be replaced by a persistent instance of AdvancedFM, but I haven't the skills to make it happen.

When the DocTab off feature was first introduced I remember them saying that it will be off until a better alternative could be found. Perhaps the idea of a filemanager would be a perfect replacement, maybe someone from the Opie team could comment. Does anyone use the doctab?

Some remarks:

1.) opie-doctab is the settings application that allows to disable the doctab functionality.

2.) When I added the possibility to disable the doctab functionality I also looked for ways to hide it completely. After fiddling for two days, I couldn't do that without destabilizing the launcher, so I gave up. Patches appreciated

3.) We would embrace any better alternative, but we don't have one. We would like to have a SharpROM 3.x fileview or just opie-advancedfm in the doctab, but there haven't been any patches coming in for that.

This looked like an interesting alternative:

http://www.freewebs.com/josiahbryan/

For a while, there was no code for this, and it was originally a launcher replacement (i.e. the standard Opie launcher would be uninstalled).

There is now code for the file browser element (called FileView2).  There also appears to be code for hooking it into the rest of Opie.  I can't be sure though. . . I don't speak C++. . .
