Sandisk 2gb Sd Card Mounting Problem

There is a faq on the edits needed to add a new type of CF card, but I haven't found one for SD cards and am not having much luck trying to do something similar with the new 2GB Sandisk SD card. Mine is the regular, not the Ultra, since I understand the Z can't use the extra speed. I can mount it on my C1000 (running pdaxrom RC10) as /dev/sda1 using a USB reader. When I try to mount it as /dev/mmcda1 in the sd slot I get the unhelpfully vague message:

"wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mmcda1 or too many mounted file systems (could this be the IDE device where you in fact use ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)"  

Specifying vfat and trying sda instead didn't help. Is there a file that needs a new entry for this card, like for a new CF card? How do I get the information to enter there?

My plan is to put Debian onto the 2GB sd card, as running it on a 1 GB card now doesn't quite let me do what I want. I can then add a 2GB or 4GB cf card and network though a USB bluetooth dongle to my cell phone and desktop, hopefully ending up with something closer to real laptop capability and longer battery life using the C1000 rather than the more expensive models with WiFi and microdrives.  Hopefully, the major remaining problem after that is all set up will be the cell phone bill.

I've read on these forums that Sandisk SD cards generally don't work well in Zauruses.  I don't know why.  The suggestion is usually buy another brand...

Hmm, you should be ok just modifying /etc/fstab.  Since you need to reformat it to ext2 or ext3 for debian, why don't you do that when it's mounted with your usb drive and see if it works after that?

By the way, which card reader do you have?  I'm looking for an SD card reader that works with linux, working with my C1k would be just awesome.

The same failure occurs with a 2GB ATP card, while a 1GB Sandisk card is recognized and works fine. Also, the 2GB Sandisk card works through a USB reader on the Z. Personally, I have had no problem with several smaller capacity Sandisk cards, though I know others have, typically in the context of reformating or early failure. I haven't heard of any problems recognizing them upon insertion.

I'm guessing there is a setting somewhere that needs to be edited because of the 2GB capacity and wondering if anyone knows which file or how to determine the necessary setting.

The current /etc/fstab line works with a vfat 1GB Sandisk card. What option needs changing? I'd rather make sure the Z can recognize it before reformatting, since I have other uses for it as a vfat card if it is not going to work on the Z.

A tiny plastic very cheap mediaGear casing which is a bit flimsy and designed for you to insert the sd card and leave it rather than take it in and out, and a Sandisk MobileMate designed for repeated insertion and ejection.  An older internal reader that came with my Shuttle could not read the 2GB cards but could read 1GB cards fine, again suggesting to me that some setting needs changing to reflect that difference. It doesn't seem like it should be a kernel issue if the 2GB card works through USB, but I haven't studied that stuff and could be quite wrong.

FWIW I'm using an Ultra Sandisk 1Gb SD card with no problems on my C1k. Plug and play so I think that would make it vfat (FAT32)?

I have a Kingston CF reader that worked just fine with my 6K, as well as a Sandisk SD card reader that worked with the 6K as well. Haven't tried either with the C1K because it's so easy to just attach the Z to my laptop to read my microdrive, and my laptop also has an SD slot so I don't need the card readers to read either card on my laptop.

These don't answer your original question stbrock, but thought they might be of value. Good luck finding the answer to your question. If you do, and could share it, I for one would appreciate it. A geek can not have to much RAM, or storage space....

you thing you mentioned about the atp one.  2gb for 217 but i think i will go for a lexar or a PNY.

i hear PNY and ATP are the same bot dont quote me on that

Lexar is my first option.
