Backup Battery Or Capacitor
« on: July 20, 2005, 02:37:11 pm »
Hi

Does anyone know how the Cx00 series holds the date and time between shutdown's or battery changes? I know the SL5500 used a ni-cad with limited charge/discharges cycles, 100 cycles only if I remember rightly and I'm interested to know if the Cx00 relies on a ni-cad or super cap.

thanks
Rich

They dont have anything other than the main battery + flash memory.  While its possable to shutdown a 5500, swap the battery and power on without rebooting or losing any open files, with the C series this is not possable.

It appears to remember the date/time that you pulled the battery, looks as if it adds a couple of minutes to this & offers this as the default as part of the boot up process.

Somehow it holds the time somewhere. It does this through the use of 'sltime'. You call 'sltime-set' to set the time, and 'sltime' to retrieve the time.
I've got it set to call 'sltime -set' on suspend, shutdown, and 'sltime' in one of the startup scripts. As my Z hardly crashes, and when it doesn I quickly restart, I don't tend to lose time.

Still, it would be nice if it had a hardware RTC.
