Right, ipkg-link is a pile of shit

The problem was that I left the SD card in (and it had a cardfs installation).  The ipkg-link tool for some reason found the cardfs filesystem on the SD card instead of the CF card (despite the fact I specified /media/cf on the command line).

Removing the SD card before running ipkg-link seems to have solved the problem (mostly).  Hopefully someone else can learn from this piece of advice

Thanks to everyone for help.

I'll have a look

I've checked the script and didn't find anything that could cause this problem

You were right, wrong kernel (had named it zImage instead of zImage.bin... silly Zaurus owner!).

Reflashing now (and SO NICE not to see the SHARP logo filling the screen--nothing against Sharp, but I couldn't read any boot messages!).

 One bit of "human interface" stuff.  I've gotten to the questions about "I found a .backup, do you want me to restore?" and answered no.

The next question is confusing: "Do you want me to delete your settings?  If you upgraded from Sharp rom, this is required".  Well, I *do* want to delete my settings then.  But the prompt is actually "enter OK to restore your backups".  So the answer to one question is "yes", but you really want to type "no" I think, and I have to admit that is confusing to me.  Maybe changing the wording there would be a touch more clear.

Works great, and having the right kernel fixed my Buffalo problem of course.  Thanks again!

How do you just flash the kernel without having to re-flash the initrd.bin?
You follow the same procedure you would use to flash both, except only place the updater.sh and the kernel (zimage.bin) on your card.

Well, I tried that and now all I get on bootup are the OpenZaurus spalsh screen and a blinking cursor....  Any Ideas on how to get my Z to boot again?

Well I'm new here so I will say hello first, HELLO, ok now that thats done,

on my 5500 no matter how I flash it I get the same thing, the open zaurus splash screen and a blinking curser.

I've tried renaming the zimage since one thread says use .bin at the end but the OZ site says not to but I get the same results either way.

what I am doing is putting zImage.bin and initrd.bin on the cf card and putting cardfs on sd and always get the same result.

   Any help is appreciated.

Hello Hydro

For the collie (5500) it’s zImage. Copy the zImage, initrd.bin and the cardfs-whatever.bin onto your CF-card and flash as per instructions.

Instructions:

http://hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/docs/ca...ml#installation

If you still have problems let us know.

OK…

Is the CF-card filesystem ok? You may have to format.
Are the md5sums of your files ok? You may have to d/l again?

What is the size of your CF-card? Some users have problems with large cards and some CF-cards just won’t flash properly… can you try another card?

CF/SD fdisk/formatting just in case you need it:
https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Step-b...ing_for_newbies

The md5sum of the initrd.bin is in the T3.tar.gz (please check that)

hmmm ... I spoke too early. Now I tried to install cardfs and it keep failing. When I format the SD card, it keeps getting errors. I'll retry and post the error messages.

EDIT: After fdisk and mkfs.ext2, when I mount it and try to create a directory, it says "... Input/Output error ..."

Sometimes mkfs.ext2 will have errors saying the partition is zero size. Any idea? I just got this SD card new.

btw, the umount command should read
Code: [Select]
umount /media/CF and
Code: [Select]
umount /media/card respectively in the link above.

* Updated the wiki page. In case if I got that wrong, let me know and I'll revert to the original ...

Re-Installing cardfs without flashing

    If you have messed up your SD card, you can easily re-install the cardfs.

        * Copy cardfs-$whatever.bin into /mnt/ram, /mnt/cf or /mnt/card
        * Quit the Opie GUI (Settings / Quit)
        * Log in to the console as user root (no password)
        * Run "rm /etc/.cardfs_installed"
        * Run "cardfs_install.sh

the 2nd last command should read
Code: [Select]
"rm /etc/.carfs_installed"
There should not be a "d" ... carfs_installed and not carDfs_installed.
