Hello everybody

First of all, thanks chero, xfce looks cool :-).
I miss just two bits of functionality from the default matchbox desktop.

1. A way to automatically blank the screen when the lid is closed (and as an added bonus: is there a way to have a cool screensaver?)
2. A way to use the Fn+3, Fn+4 keys to adjust brightness

Are these two things possible?

Thanks,
-Grigoris

I am really enjoying xfce4.

I would like to make the rotation work better:

- It does not rotate when I switch from portait to landscape

- It would be cool if I had the option to move the panel to the right side when I rotate (it is too long to work well on the bottom)

If someone is knowledgeable enough to tell me how to do these things/ I can write the scripts myself.

Thanks.

Ditto on the two posts above...that would be excellent!

I have written a script that can move the panel between the bottom and the right hand side.  I just need to integrate it with the rotate script and this will be done.

If someone could explain how the function keys and other events work, I could try and fix some of those as well.

I found this post that suggests a way to make some of the automatic functionality work by calling chkhinge in a loop.  Not very elegant.

Is there a better way?  Is there a way to do the equivalent of rc.xml?

Looks like xkeymouse may be related?

I am going to try it and post my results.

in icewm I bind XF86RotateWindows key so that it executes "chkhinge",

ie a shortcut key for the key " XF86RotateWindows"  that executes chkinge.

Maybe this could work with xfce?

Yep. It works.

Go to XFCE Settings Manager -> Window Manager -> Keyboard
Add a new theme.
Click on a free command shorcut, use chkhinge when prompted for the command, and rotate
the screen when prompted for a key.

I've been trying to get the Fn + 3 & 4 to work along with the shortcut & silkscreen keys that are set in Matchbox/Openbox without any luck

Anyone out there have a clue how get these to work in xfce4?

I flashed RC12 Saturday and decided to give XFCE4 a go as well. So far I have visually liked it (with ROX pinboard and all), but the autohide gives me headache. I really like the option of hiding the panel, but do you know if it is any way possible to get the panel unhide via the keyboard (with the Menu button or something)?

I'd like to have the panel on the bottom with autohide, but if I do it I can't get it unhidden with the mouse (since the pointer doesn't go low enough). Right now I have it on the right edge, but that's not optimal for me.

Alternatively I'd like a plugin that I can use to hide/unhide the panel. So far I haven't found any hints from the XFCE FAQs or wikis.

BTW, is is possible to unmount a volume with the panel mntplugin?

Yes, just click on the volume you want to umount & it'll unmount. When you click on the mntplugin again you'll see it's no longer mounted.

I have a problem using debian chrooted under Xfce4.

When I try to run a chrooted app using Crd, I get:
Quote
cannot connect to X server 127.0.0.1:0

I tried all the solutions in the debian thread but in fact when I try to do xhost +localhost I get
Quote
xhost: unable to open display "127.0.0.1:0"

The confusing part is when I start X with matchbox by just startx and not startxfce I can run debian chrooted apps no prob.

So it must be something connected to the Xfce4. What's wrong?

Incidentally, when starting X with Xfce4 everytime I get the login to create a profile or use a default one, I create one, and next time I start X it's not there and the same "create profile" dialog appears. Is this a permissions issue? Connected with the display thingie?

You are right, didn't remove it. Doh... Now it's fixed and all's fine

One more thing is about the Profile? Should it always ask me to select the default profile and not keep the one I've created before?

Last thing, in RC12 feed there is the mb-applet-keyrus Keyboard switching application, enabling you to use different national keyboards. However when I run it under xfce4, it starts up, no errors, however it doesn't appar in the task bar. Where can I see it / enable it?

OK, figured this one out, this is set in the Settings wizzard.

But this one is really bothering me. It seems taskbar applets don't run under xfce4 or where do I set this?

This keyboard switcher applet doesn't show up anywhere.

Same with uim-toolbar-gtk-systray applet. If I start it, just doesn't show up. And it's not the applet's fault I'd think, because uim-toolbar-gtk works and shows...

But there must be something simple I'm missing to make these taskbar applets work, or?...

Sorry I don't mean to cross post or hijack the thread.  But finally I see the solution is actually quite simple:  just edit /etc/X11R6/bin/startx in the same way as /usr/local/bin/startxfce4 (i.e. removing " -nolisten tcp").   Perhaps the discussion in the debian thread has been streched out and the tips are spread all over the thread.   At the risk of redundancy I will post a step-by-step idiot guide there very soon.
