Last thing, in RC12 feed there is the mb-applet-keyrus Keyboard switching application, enabling you to use different national keyboards. However when I run it under xfce4, it starts up, no errors, however it doesn't appar in the task bar. Where can I see it / enable it?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
But this one is really bothering me. It seems taskbar applets don't run under xfce4 or where do I set this?

This keyboard switcher applet doesn't show up anywhere.

Same with uim-toolbar-gtk-systray applet. If I start it, just doesn't show up. And it's not the applet's fault I'd think, because uim-toolbar-gtk works and shows...

But there must be something simple I'm missing to make these taskbar applets work, or?...

Do you have a systray running ?
There are at least two ways :
- the "xftaskbar4" holds a systray
- if you removed the "xftaskbar4" like I did, then you can add a systray to the panel (systray-plugin). Add a systray to the panel, you will see an empty space. Then run the applets from the dropdown menu (if you're not running rox). Wait a bit and they should appear in the systray-plugin-area.

Chero,

When you compiled 4.2, did you have to change any source code besides tweaks to gnu auto-config scripts? I'm trying to compile the latest and greatest from subversion trunk repository, but having a couple of problems:

1. The new panel code doesn't re-maximize when screen is rotated, i.e when screen is rotated from landscape to partrait mode, panel (like all other applications) doesn't adjust its size to the new screen geometry.

2.  Sound volume panel applet craps out.

3. All addons from goodies page don't compile because they haven't yet been changed to play nice with latest svn code, i.e. panel and config changes.

Just a few minor things, i have to check my notes. I think it was mainly about using the right configure-options.
They released 4.2.3.1 on 2005/11/08. Grabbing that source is probably a lot easier than going through svn, and it's only 6 days old. It could save you lots of trouble. Have you checked the changelog ? I don't see a reason there to compile a new version yet. (But that's just a personal opinion). Or is svn already about the upcoming 4.4 release ?

Yes, svn trunk is about what 4.4 would look like. It's quite different from 4.2.3.1, but I'm not really excited so far based on what I see, especially since all the goodies need to be chnaged to play nice with the new panel code.

Just took a look on osnews about xfce 4.4. Not sure I like what I read there.
How does the panel behave in 4.4 ? Is it on every desktop, or do you have lo launch one on every desktop ?
The iconbox and taskbar are parts of the panel now ?

From what I understand, the goodies will have to be changed but I'm not sure they will allow "third party goodies" (".... panel plugins that make the panel crash ....").

About the behaviour of apps and the panel you described : I guess that's what they mean by the changes in xfdesktop and xfwm. It's upto the (power)-user to decide how the apps should behave, not upto the desktop or the WM.

I just had a quick glance, let's hope I misunderstood a few things and that the code you're trying to build isn't final yet.

The positive thing I've seen : Thunar.

Anyway, before compiling it on (for) my Z, I'm going to try the final release on my home box.

Just a (stupid) question. Will the performance improves if we recompile the same version xfces4 with RC11 Cross SDK?

I think the new C compiler will give a faster binary.

Yes, taskbar and iconbox are parts of the new panel now. The panel configuration code is different too - applets need to be dragged (which is IMHO quite annoying on the Z) to be added/removed to/from the panel. To change the applet's position, it needs to be dragged again.

I think I'm done with playing with the 4.4 code. I was trying to find any improvements related to running it on the Zaurus, but so far it looks quite opposite. I'll compile 4.2.3.1 instead and try to tweak it to suite my taste.

I think the upgrades are meant for a desktop (I'm not sure they know how the Z works, or even what the Z is - though I pointed Benedict to these forums). They would make working on a desktop more intuitive. Maybe the usb-enable Zs that can use a mouse could benefit from it. But what about portability ?

I was even thinking about version 4.0.6 (downgrade ?). It has the option to make the panel behave as any other app. This way you can drag apps in front of the panel (using full-screen without hiding the panel) and bring the panel back to top using alt-tab. I know it has an auto-hide feature now, but to use this properly, you need a mouse (there goes portability again).

just my 2 cents.

Well, I have a usb mouse connected most of the time, and still don't like the new panel. Guess it's a matter of personal preferences.

As far as hiding/unhiding goes, I'll try to add the option to use the key to unhide the panel, maybe make it to bring up the menu as well.

I would like to show off my xfce/rox desktop from time to time (we are always changing them aren't we?), but don't know how to get a screengrab. I've searched the forums, but nothing is really making any sense. It would be good to see what people do. Anyone point me to a simple howto/ipkg?

Thanks

there are some "how to"s in the pdaxrom forum. and also on pdaxrom.org.

sleep 5;xwd -display :0.0 -root -out /where/you/want/to/save/your/screenshot.xwd

sleep 5 makes it wait 5seconds and than it takes a screenshot

take a look at [a href=\"http://users.telenet.be/zaurususer/screenshots/full-taskbar.jpg]this screenshot[/url], it shows an aterm taking a screenshot.

If you want to change desktop or alt-tab or minimize windows, you could use the sleep command first:
Code: [Select]
# sleep 10; xwd .........this gives you 10 seconds before the actual screen is captured.

To convert them to jpg, I use ImageMagick (there or some ipks around) :
Code: [Select]
# convert screen1.xwd screen1.jpg
There is also another way : Look for the working version of the Gimp (there has been talked about it recently). It has an option to take screenshots.

Is there a problem with the systray plugin? I downloaded it from the "old" directory of the feed and when I run mb-applet-keyrus - a keyboard switcher, the switcher works, but there's only a white box in the systray, it doesn't display the flag icon.

I've noticed this behavior only with the systray plugin. If you use the systray in the taskbar, then it displays the icon fine.

But I'd like to use the systray plugin, since I use the taskbar plugin for the panel and would like to keep using the panel. Is there a solution?

try resizing the panel (panel properties). I think if you make it "large" it will show the icon. If you resize to medium afterwards, it will keep on showing it. There were some posts about this in that (long) thread with the wrong title : "OK, kde works, how about ...".
