How I Installed Openoffice/debian On My C1000

Hey all,

I asked for an idiot's guide, here I'm gonna try and write one.

I have a C1000, a 512mb CF card and 1gb SD card.

1. Go to Meanie's site and have a look at the page about all this!

At the bottom of this page download from the links available the following files:

Updated debian install script
Updated version of xqt-debian-scripts (version 0.5)

2. Go to chuckster's website and download the following files:

xqt-gtk-jumbopack_0.4.3-0.6_arm.zip
zaurus-debian-doc-v18.tar.gz
zaurus-debian-jumbo-v18-b01.tar.gz
zaurus-debian-openoffice114.tar.gz

3. Put all of these files onto your compact flash card (I put every file on the root), unzipping the three .zip files first and put the CF card into your zaurus.

4. I recommend you plug in your Zaurus and set most of the power saving settings to maximum run times, so the Zaurus won't go into power save or start a screen saver while you're doing this.

5. Using the Zaurus' Add/Remove software program, install xqt-gtk-jumbopack. This takes a little while. When it's done it might say that it is dependent on another package, mine did and it never stopped it working, so I ignored it.

6. Using the Zaurus' Add/Remove software program, install xqt-debian-scripts.

7. Open up a command console and format your SD card as ext2 using the following code.

# su
# umount /mnt/card
# mkfs.ext2 /dev/mmcda1
# mount -t ext2 /dev/mmcda1 /mnt/card
# mkdir /mnt/card/debroot
8. Still in the same command console go to the cf card and run the installer script file:

# cd /mnt/cf
# ./xqt-debian-install.sh /mnt/card/debroot
Again this takes a fairly long time to run.

9. Once this has run, still in the same command console type:

Code: [Select]

# xlauncher debian
After a bit of a wait, debian should open.
From within here you can use the "start" menu and find open office and open that, and after another bit of a wait, that too should open.

I seriously hope this helps people!

If I've made a mistake, or missed something out, please tell me and I'll correct it.

One thing, you don't need to format your SD card to ext2, but it sure would make Debian run faster. However, in order to take advantage of the ext2 filesystem, you should had commented out DEBIMG (put a # in front of it) in the debian install script. That way it could had just installed directly onto your ext2 formatted disk without creating the pocketworkstation loop file which is only needed if you dont have a ext2 formatted disk, ie if its vfat/fat32.

But anyway, have fun  PocketWorkstation already comes with quite a lot of applications installed, but I had to add my favourites, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice and Eterm.

If you have the space, then you might consider expanding the openoffice cram image to make it load a bit faster. Also running it natively on a ext2 SD (without the loop device) also makes it faster. Ultimately, running it off a CF card would make it fastest. I am going to go on a shopping trip soon (next week) and will be away for 1 month and hopefully will get myself a new 4 GB CF card or even the new 8 GB one  It's gonna be me and my Zaurus and shop tilll I drop kind of thing   , lots of booze and sunny beaches as well.

One last thing, just so I can have something to do while you are away, in your XQt description you say  â€œThe Mozilla Thunderbird package from pdaXrom [thunderbird_0.6_armv5tel.ipk] works with X/Qt on the C3000, however, there might be some dependent libraries missing. I have build a thunderbird package [thunderbird_0.6-1_arm.ipk] which includes hopefully all the missing libraries..”

It might solve my  problems to have thunderbird_0.6-1_arm.ipk, where can I find it please?

Once it's open, it's ok, a bit of a delay if you do anything complicated or mess about in the menus.

But opening up takes a fair while, as does opening files.

OOo is a bit of a bloater on mac G4 1.2ghz PowerBook, so am not that surprised.

X seems cover up my entire Qtopia except the taskbar at the bottom

there's probably an applet out there somewhere that can give you a sort of "task manager", and that would mean it's accessable from the taskbar

I'm afraid I don't know, I've not tried to install either of these.

Firefox is already in the debian, btw.

If you tap on any non X apps on the qtopia task bar, that seems to revert emphasis back to Qtopia, so at that point you can press the buttons on the Z, otherwise they don't seem to work.

If you tap some of the desktop in X and press the menu key, you get the chance to fullscreen or terminate X.

because it complains firefox , but it is installed under /mnt/card/debroot/  not my normal root /

Hi all,

After following Omro's directions I get to the place where I enter "xlauncher debian" (or just plain xlauncher for that matter) and things seem to go just fine.  I get a line saying "starting X for Debian - please wait a moment. . ."

Then nothing but #.  There are no fireworks, no new screen or window, just that pound sign in the terminal waiting for the next command.

When I installed there were two glitches.

1.  Where omro said there were some missing dependencies that he ignored, I got that same set of messages.

2.  When installing debian I got two error messages:
  /etc/rc5.d/S50mnt:  no such file/dir
  /etc/rc6.d/K50mnt:  no such file/dir

Also,  I did all of this without installing the openoffice package.  All I want is gnumeric.  I prefer it over openoffice.

Also,  there was a message about /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf on /mnt/card/debroot that looked like an informational message.  I have not edited either of these files.

One other thing:  I did not have sudo installed in the beginning.  I now have it installed.  xlauncher still won't start.

Any suggestions?
