Portable Linux Gaming/media Device - Gpx2
« on: July 28, 2005, 12:38:39 pm »
Probably only of mild interest here, but if you're familiar with Korea's Gamepark 32 (portable friend to the Homebrew and Emulator crowd) you might be interested that it looks to be updated soon.  But this time it's packing Linux!

 http://www.gpx2.com/product/product.asp

It looks really nice (nearly as appealing physically as the PSP IMHO). Plays a good range of video formats and uses all too common SD media (yay!). And if you check their website you'll see tha encourage users to develop their own games/software and happily support emulators!

I'm a little puzzled by it's lack of expandability.  It doesn't seem to have any provisions for adding hardware accessories, so it doesn't look like WIFI will be an option.  Not necessarily a bad thing, but it would be nice.

I just might pick one of these things up if really does beat the $190 price of the current GP32.

 Enjoy!

Most likely, considering that it support WMA and WMV, DRM is just so you download songs from services like Napster and play them back on your device. This is from the makers of the GamePark 32, and they openly encourage emulator making and playing on the device, so it's very unlikely they'd do something mean like require the programs to be encrypted.

w/ a 1.8" drive (or other large storage) this could be something of an ipod killer. Very nifty as is, though.

I won't be trading in my Z for one... (thuogh I bet it does better video playback), but I'd buy something like this before I'd buy an mp3 player. If it only had a cf slot (it would need more batteries)...

The drm stuff is sure not hardware based, though?  Maybe it would be disableable?

Looking at the supported formats, it looks like the only thing they could DRM is wmv/wma formats, at least in my opinion.  It still does mpeg/4, divx, xvid, mp3 and - get this - ogg.  That seems pretty open to me.  I never use wmv/wma anyway.

they problem here is that it is being nudged into us.  That is just a start.  Sooner or later, it's gona be all the files drm.  So i honstly think everybody should just make a stand and say no to this kind control.

Look at the size of the thing, look at the interface, and say that again.
There is no damn iPod killer.

That's not going to happen in force until Palm OS for Linux comes out, and then only in vertical markets. This little 'nudge' has nothing to do with what's coming down the pike. Years of corporate philisophy, of companies in full control of their projects and what they run, is the culprit. With encrypted executables they can comply with the GPL, but still have full control of their devices and what they run.

In the consumer world, that philisophy is product death. Sony BetaMax, IBM PS/2, etc. tried locking down their products, and where are they now? When it comes to consumer handelds, Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 is the limit on how much control you can have over a device and still manage to have a market, and MS has removed a good number of restrictions on the PPC platform since then.

For the most part I gotta agree with cresho, it's not the fact that it has the DRM capability so much as they had to LICENSE said DRM, so by buying this you are paying a "drm tax" even if you don't intend to use said functionality. that money still makes it back to M$ or whoever else holds the license.

It's no different than buying a new laptop with WinXP on it, even if you intend to install linux you've already paid the M$ tax and they still get your money.

Hmm... That is food for thought. Oddly that "DRM Tax" might just be a negative number. The GPX2 is vastly superior to the preceding model, and yet, they're intending to sell it for less. It could be that either:
A) They're getting a kick-back from the DRM company, with DRM company hoping for future revenue from the unit in exchange for content. Not unlike the Napster rebate on portable music players here in the US.
or
B) They're gambling on the future, and hoping that they can sell DRM'ed content to their users, and cutting profit of the handheld in hopes of selling more secondary content. Like most video game companies do with games, except most likely with video and music in this case.
