Usb Keyboard

I recently got a sl-c3100 and I was reading the forums and people said that they just plugged in the usb keyboard and it worked.  So I got one of the goldX 5 in 1 USB cables, it has switchable ends, and plugged in a spare cheap usb keyboard that was laying around.  Its a full size one and has media buttons, etc.  The power listing on the back say 5V 50mA.  Anyway I plug it in and nothing happens, no num lock light, and pressing the keys does nothing.  Is there anything I should try.  I'm running the original rom, no changes.  Thanks for the help.

i also got this machine an the usb keyboard thing works fine for me .. you need to plug in the right cable in the back .. ( usb female ) and of it goes
you could check if it loads the correct modules with lsmod
thould be something like "ohci" and "hid"

Thanks for the point in the right direction but I'm still not having any luck.  When I run an lsmod neither of modules were loaded.  So after some googling I found out how to insmod and insmod usbcore.o in the /lib/modules.rom/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/usb.  Still nothing so I insmod usbkbd.o then hid.o.  Still nothing.  There is a module called usb_ohci.pxa27x.o but when I try to insmod that one I get:

usb_ohci_pxa27x.o:  init_module:  Operation not permitted
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters

So now I'm stuck again.

I've had trouble with getting a KB to work as well, but I'm still plugging away.  But since the OP (original poster) didn't precisely answer the question, I'll ask if he/she doubltechecked the cable.  I'm pretty sure I've heard of GoldX adapters working, but I personally bought a uab cable kit with 8 plug variations, and none of them was Mini USB A male.  Have you gotten any OTHER USB perifierals to work ?  To show up in system info ?

 That may not be the problem, but it might be worth double checking.  The mini plugs (A vs.  look similar in pictures, but Mini B pinches inward towards the middle, while A kinda flairs out.

I also had problems, using a USB keyboard from a DELL PC.
The keyboard kind of worked, but keys had other funktions assigned than they should.
E.g. pressing "h" did a return, pressing various other keys did nothing, pressing space brought up an "n" and such things.

What can be the reason?

On the back the keyboad says "5V, 100mA". It's a DELL SK-8115 made in China.

I posted in another thread about my troubles getting a Stowaway USB keyboard to work.  My experience was similar to daniel3000's:  the keyboard was recognized, but some keys didn't work.  On the Stowaway, it turns out that the NumLock key is not being recognized correctly, and the keyboard is in NumLock mode constantly.  

The work-around was to plug the keyboard into a Linux or Windows box first, set the NumLock the way I want it, and then plug it into my Z.  My conclusion was that there's some kind of initialization that occurs when the keyboard is plugged into a "regular" usb connection that isn't happening with my Z.

I'm still looking for a long-term solution.  I'm using the USB A cable that was supplied by Conics with my 3000, and it works fine with another USB device, so I think the cable is not the issue.  I'm guessing the issue is something to do with the USB keyboard module.

Thanks for the help everyone.  I got the keyboard to input stuff.  Turns out, me being the genius that I am, I was grabbing the mini b as opposed to the mini a.  Most of the keys are working, except for a few like ":".  I'll have to remeber to check the simple stuff next time too.
