Hello,

I am interested in purchasing a Zaurus but have a question as to the models being sold or available in the U.S. Has sharp stopped selling the Zaurus in America? If so, is Dynamism the best/only alternative for a new unit?

Thanks in advance.

Sharp no longer sells the Zaurus in the US. You can get them through many different importers, with Dynamism being the most expensive. Others include PriceJapan.com, conics.net, streamlinecpus.com, etc. Most importers perform some kind of English localization, although some are more thorough than others, I believe.

'iCruise' has advised you well.  A few more things to note...

To be completely honest, I've heard few of the people on these boards say they've purchased through Dynamism.  I think they are the most expensive.  I don't know... their warranty, and localisation might be worth it, but the unit cost s lower at the
other places

Amazon.com usually has a few to offer (maybe used, maybe new...even NEW [sealed/unused] SL-5500s occasionally pop up).  They currently have both 5500s and a couple 6000s available.

And while we're talking online, theres always eBay.  5500s are easy and cheap, 5600s not uncommon, 6000s basicaly rare, Cxx0 also rare but they apear now and again, Cxx00 are of course the most prolific right now.

I tend to think the online retailers are better.  Though you might save some of the unit cost by using an online auction, usually not enough to mitigate the superior translation and warranty service that most of the online retailers offer (be sure you read the details WHEREVER you purchase from).  Plus, one or two of the retailers offer little extras like a global power adapter and/or the usb host cable (both of which you will almost certainly want). I purchased through eBay and had no real problems with the unit or the deal, but in the end I didn't save any money (in fact I might have paid a little more than if I had gotten everything at once from a single merchant...)

All that said, it kind of depends on what model you want.  There are rumblings that the C-3000 will soon (if not already) be put out of production, having been eclipsed by the C-3100 (it has 128mb of flash instead of 16mb, I think other than that and the chassis/case color they are the same).  So if for some reason you MUST have a C3000, ebay may soon be your only option.

But, for the C1000 and C3100 all the options discussed above are possibilities, as they are both in active production by Sharp (though I don't think Amazon currently has any of the Cxx00 right now).

I probably don't need to mention (but will anyway) the 5500, 5600, and 6000 have long since gone out of production, as have the Cxx0 series of clamshells.

Don't forget about the 'Deals and Great Z buysDeals and Great Z buys' forum of this very site.  Some people find the Z is not realy for them, and others like to try all the different models so they swamp'em around.  It's usually used stuff, or tips to cheap prices for accessories onlin, but it's always worth a look...

 Hope this helps...

William,

the answer is easy:

PDA-Style model:
SL-6000 in production, corporate sales only, available
via StreamlineCPUs.

Clamshell models:
SL-C3000 out of production since January 2005.
Actual models are SL-C1000 / SL-C3100 available through
StreamlineCPUs in the US.

Yikes!     They killed the C-3000 in JANUARY ?!?!?!? Wasn't it only first released in November of '04 ?

It was in sales and production (concurrently) for only 2 MONTHS !?!?!?!?

Wow...I hope Sharp didn't get too badly scalded taking THAT particular bath...

Mock hysteria aside I  would guess they didn't.  It shares so many commonalities with the C-1000 and C-3100 neither the components nor the R&D would have gone to waste at all.

I guess the people who got mildly screwed then are those who bought C3000s.  Unless they bricked their units they shouldn't be anywhere near needing to be replaced, and so they're stuck with the 16mb of flash while C3100 buyers are merrily enjoying the best of both worlds.

Not nice Sharp.  What was the point???

It's a good thing the C3000 is a good unit in and of itself, regardless if something mildly  'better' is out...

Thanks BTW for correting my errors.  I am quite surprised to also see the 6000 is still in production.  Go figure...

TsingTao,
that was not what i said.

The SL-C3000 was in production from October 2004 to January
2005. With a monthly production capacity of 15000 units, we're
talking about 60000 units of the top model produced.

If you look at Japanese vendors, the SL-C3000 is still in sales.
For example, overseas models often have only 1-3 production
months. Even if they're sold over two years, it's all these stock
the factory made in a few weeks.

Conclusion: The SL-C3000 is actually still available, but no new
units are produced.

To: Marc

Ok.... So it was only in sales and production CONCURRENTLY for 3 months (I guess 4 if you include january).

I wasn't implying you couldn't buy the C3000 anymore.  It just seemed surprising to me that the CONCCURENT sales and production time was so short.

Aparently however this is not that uncommon.  Welp...consider me educated.

Apologies if I caused any confusion to anyone!

Since we're on the subject, and just out of curiosity, are the C-1000 and C-3100  only going to have a single production run each as well ?  If it's of similar numbers I suppose 60,000 units x2 of a moderately niche (outside of Japan anyway) PDA (sorry... 'PMT' ) is plenty of stock to move.

Still no integrated wifi though...oh well...

 Thanks for the clarification Marc!

On the other hand, take a look at vcrs, cell phones, etc.  After a few months, they're gone forever.

TsingTao,

most products don't match with sales and production time.
You need to know how a mass manufacturer works. SHARP
factory production is planned for at least 3 month ahead. So
if any item is sold out due to high demand, we have >3 months
before we can restock it (happened with the EA-BL06 batteries
to us).

Also it's not possible to produce a few items if they're sold out.
For example: If SHARP needs SL-C3100, they have to start a
production run >1 week (roughly 4000 units). Everything below
would be too expensive.

To feed your curiosity: The SL-C1000 is definitely still in production.
The SL-C3100 is too fresh. All units we had so far were from June.
Let's see if the next delivery contains some July models
And even if it's a niche product outside Japan for us, in Japan
they have a market share of >50% with the Zaurus lineup
(including the old non-linux models). Remember the shortage
of SL-C860s last summer, so much for "high numbers"

Thanks very much to all of you for all of your kind assistance and advice. After looking around a bit I think I'll go with Dynamism.com.

We'll see how it goes and I look forward to being a part of the Zaurus Community.

I wouldn't say never.  Don't get your hopes too high, but if I get a new Z, I might be willing to part with the sled to you for a fair price.
