Looking For European Reseller !
« on: August 12, 2005, 06:27:47 pm »
Hello,

I finally came to the point I decided to get myself a Zaurus SL-C3100/3000. Next point is where to buy it ? Because I live in Holland the european resellers are the best, quickest and easiest way. I don't like unfamiliar ebay or japanese pricefighters. Rather have some real service for these few extra euro's.

So what do we have:
Shirtpocket
Trisoft
Handheld-linux
....
I read about something like 'maintained reseller list', can't find it. Can anyone point me there ?

Seen the posts about bad service and communication of sp the last time and they don't sell the SL-C3100, we keep Trisoft and handheld-linux. Trisoft is my favourite because 1. they are all around this place 2. they have quite some accesoires. Still both Shirtpocket and Trisoft didn't reply my email of a week ago, so that's why I try it this way.

I want to use the Zaurus on a backpackhiking tour and I have two main issues I want to be solved before deciding on which reseller to go to:
1. The official EA-70S weights far to much (240g) for me. I want to use a lightweight universal adaptor with the Zaurus which I can combine with my other equipment. The specs of this adaptor (120g) looks to fit the Zaurus:
http://www.hape.nl/batterijen/nv68.html
2. I need external batterypower. I read threads about battpacks of 4 NiMH which should work with the SL3x00. This is great because I can charge them with a lightweight charger connected to the same Hapé adaptor.
My question to the european resellers here is if they will warrant my Zaurus if I am going to use it with the Hapé adaptor and attach it to a 4 NiMH battpak ?

I am open for other suggestions.

Rick

Sounds ok. But please verify twice (or better three times) that you have selected 5V and the correct polarity. Someone has recommended to use glue to fix the switch at 5V and the adapter part.
Here is a thread on this topic and some options: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...747&hl=polarity

Also, see this thread: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...indpost&p=90127 where they mention a Socket Mobile Power Pack: http://www.socketcom.com/product/AC4009-541.asp I am not sure if it is avaliable in Europe but google/froogle or other search engines may help.

Well, the 24 months warranty in Europe is for consumer's protection against manufacturing defects, and not for damages by improper handling by the user. So, damages by using such an adaptor or battery pack is usually not covered by warranty.

The main question might be what is with other damages. Like a key falling out or a flash memory having corrupt blocks. In these cases our repair service will be able to help. If it costs a repair fee or is covered by the warranty will be decided case by case.

The battpacks work really well. I normall have 8 (2x4) Batteries with me. I have never got to use the second set. Longest being a 11 hour plane journey,

ooops. Yes, you're right. You haven't got an answer to your
3rd mail, sorry. We checked it today and the reason was that
we read it like "i'll think about some points and come back to
you", so we haven't replied.

How should any reseller be able to do this ? We really do nearly
everything for our customers, but we can't give any warranties
for parts that we've never seen or used before. Especially if it's
an unknown power supply and we all know that the power supply
is the most crtitcal point for a Zaurus.

The only warranty we're able to give, is that the parts we sell will
work with a Zaurus. Also if a Zaurus is damaged while using one of
our accessories, we'll take care to get it back running / repaired.

Conclusion: The only party that is able to give any guarantees is
Hapé. If they're convinced about their products, they should've
no problem to give you a guarantee.

Hi Rick,

There's another European re-seller now - Figlabs. Check out our online shop

We can supply SL-C1000 / C3000 & C3100 fully converted to English with an English User Guide and next day delivery. Sorry we can't offer you a Dutch localisation yet

I think the other posters have answered your power supply queries, so just wanted to add ourselves to the list of suppliers.

Cheers

Sorry I am replying so late on this thread. Thank you all for replying. In the meanwhile I did some more research. So did I found the resellerlist.

Off course if I reverse the polarity or put the switch accidently on 6V it's me to blame. But am I also handling improper when I use a non-standard adaptor or powerpack with the proper conditions in the right way ?

When I have to take the risk of using a different adaptor or powerpack myself I need the exact conditions of the dc-port so I can check this with the specs of powerdevices. I can't find much more than that the dc-port needs 5 Volt (and not more), 1 Ampere and the right polarity. Can you confirm this or is there any more to consider ?

Suppose I have done the folowing:
1. doublechecked with Hapé (and probably measured) if the Hapé-adaptor really gives 5 Volt max.
2. 3,4,5 times doublechecked if I really put it on 5V and the polarity is right
Can you guys tell me if there is still any uncertainty left why I could fry the internal charger ?

Nicolaus, thanks for pointing me to the Socket mobile power pack. Can I use this powerpack without any risk on the Zaurus ? I found in the archives that Trisoft used to sell the Samsung Digimax Powerpack, 5V, 3600 mAh. Does Trisoft still warrants the use with the SL-C3100 ?

I am also looking at the powerpack of voltaic systems, 5V, 2800mAh.

Figlabs, I saw you are using the Sony PSP-100 adaptor with the SL-C3100. Can you tell me if this adaptor is lighter then the EA-70S ?

Hi Rick,
Having just scientifically weighed both adapters in my hand  I would say the Sony is slightly lighter, but not by a huge amount. They are physically almost the same dimensions - Sony is 0.5 cm thinner, Sharp is 0.5 cm shorter.

I bought a 4-AA battery pack from AddonsWorld.co.uk, which I think was mentioned here. It worked fine with my Zaurus for approximately 15 minutes. Then it started overheating, the plastic started to melt, and now it's unusable with one destroyed battery permanently welded into the unit.  Luckily the Zaurus was undamaged.

Any suggestions on more reliable 4-AA packs?

Thanks
Rohan
