Howdy all,

Just thought I'd say Hi before I get to all the annoying newbie questions...

Awaiting delivery of a 5500 and just wanted to ask what Rom would everyone recommend for a total newb on his first install (figure I may as well try to get it right the first time).

I'm not great on specs and statistics (don't really have the background to understand them), so I'm not real clear on the differences between the various packages out there.  I did a search of the site, but didn't understand a lot of what I read...

Looking for something user-friendly.  I plan to use my Zaurus for office type applications, Japanese language study, ebooks and let my kids watch movies on long car rides.

I can generally get everything to work - sort of - if I fiddle long enough in a GUI environment, but I'm totally lost if there's any coding or command line stuff required.  So, I'm hoping for stuff I can install from a GUI without having to tweak it.

So, please everyone, any tips, user friendly software recommendations for the sort of stuff I want to do, useful links for newbs or whatever would be greatly appreciated

Thank you all (Cheers from Westen Japan).

You'll probably get a lot of different opinions on which rom is the best and there will be a large element of truth to most, if not all of them.

Before I got my Z, I was uncomfortable with a command line, even though I had been using Linux on my desktop off and on, for quite a while.  I  still shy away from command lines for everyday use, but from learning to tweak the Z, and installing a few different, "home on SD," configurations, which required some simple command line stuff and a shell script to tweak the speed. I have become slightly more comfortable with a terminal and find myself using it more and more when necessary and the more I learn, the more necessary it seemingly becomes (if you have a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail eh?). Besides, I have to go ther to play Zork anyway.

Anyway, I have been trying various roms and keep returning to tKc (at present with Maslovsky's kernal update and home on SD), as it seems to recover from crashes perfectly intact and the backup restore works really well, even after a hard reset. The GUI package mananger is easy to use also, which is what attracted me to it in the first place, because I had so much trouble with OPIE's package manager and wasn't sure at the time how to install from the command line. That is also a lot easier than I though it would be. the downside is that it seems no one is going to update it anymore. I may eventually go back to Cacko Crow, because of that.

KOPI is an awesome alternative PIM and you can get the same prog for your desktop.

For ebooks, OPIE Reader or Just reader would be my pick.

Not too much choice on Word processors or spreadsheets, Hancom is it, unless you want to shell out some bucks and that will only give you one more alternative (Textmaker) for WP and OPIE's spreadsheet prog.

I use tKc video for movies, but have only tried one other, the stock Sharp player.

Can't help you with the Japanese. I'm having my own language problems.I need a good Dutch to English dictionary or tutorial.

Thanks for replying chal.  I appreciate the advice.

I guess I'm not looking for the 'best' ROM just now.  I just need the best one for a newbie to get started with (I will play around when I become a little more proficient).

The one thing I really need is the ability to sync with Outlook 2003 in a Windows XP environment.  Word processing is not a priority (though it might occassionally be useful).  Wireless can also wait a few months (though an equivalent of Palm's 'Avant Go' to browse offline and update from the desktop at synch would be very useful indeed).

Do you have isues with software when changing between platforms?  (just trying to figure out if most of what I've found in the Zaurus Software Index will work with different ROMS...).

I never had the opportunity to choose with my Treo 90, so it's all a bit confusing (but pretty cool nonetheless   )

Cheers!

I don't sync or surf, so I can't help you on those kind of issues, but I'm sure someone else will. Sometimes it takes a while to get a response, but I have gotten some good advice here and learned a lot just from lurking around.

I keep my data synced by using KOPI and Jcards on both my Z and my desktop and just copying the files to my CF card.  For word processing and spreadsheets, Hancom is compatible with MS, so there again, it's easier to just transfer files IMO.

As far as what is on ZSI (you should check ELSI also), it's been trial and error for the most part for me, but i always back up and if something goes funny, I can always restore what I had. The reason I mentioned tKc rom was not because I think it is the best rom, but for me starting out, it was as easy to use as the stock rom, but gave me the opportunity to learn by not having a lot of progs preloaded and so I had to learn what would install and what would not.

I'm not sure if you can use the zaurus to run applications like Office. However I do know you can use a pdf reader for e-books, xmms to play music and videos, Opera/Konqueror to surf the web and a few applications to check your email.
Again, I don't know if you will be able to sinc Outlook to your zaurus. Zaurus is *nix based system and you might know that Outlook runs on Win 32 based systems. So you might find some incompatibility there.

 Good luck and post updates.

Ahh, about a ROM, I think Opie will suit your needs.

Howdy prOtOn,

I can now synch Outlook (minus some detail on the calander) via Intellisinc with the new Sharp ROM.  I would describe the job as less than satisfactory, but I've seen a few threads alluding to workarounds and fixes for some of these issues.

After all the trouble I had installing the new Sharp ROM, I think I'm too scared to try another install for a while.

My big issue now is getting the Japanese language display hapening...

Oh yeah, sorry I forgot you running Sharp ROM. So yeah, with the original ROM you can sync with Windows. I used too with no problems at all.
