5600 And Openzaurus
« on: August 27, 2005, 02:58:41 pm »
I remimber trying openzaurus last year and while it looked and ran great on my 5600 it still had some very annoying and crippling bugs.

I'm thinking of flashing it to my Zaurus again and trying it out?  Anyone out there with a 5600 running openzaurus care to share your experience?  Is it still very buggy or is it stable enouph now.

I run GPE on my 5600, in anticipation of getting lardman's port of R running.  So far I haven't been able to do much besides annoy him (and Greg2) but I'm going to try to build a good crosscompile environment; not sure whether to do that on my main box or repurpose an old one.  Still researching.

I find GPE really stable on the 5600, and while the PIM apps are simple they do the job.  I liked Opie too, had some suspend/resume issues I think have been fixed.  If you are going to lean heavily on the device as a PDA, I say go with Opie.  If you want to get some of your favorite X apps running in your hand, try GPE.

The stock 3.5.3 still has a bad suspend problem for poodles. But Hentges ROM - a late July release works really well UNLESS you are trying to get a Socket/Spectrum Low Power Wireless card to work.

Be sure to check out the Altboot feature - get a 512MB or so SD card (very cheap now) - run the root (and potentially home) off the card and forget your memory worries.

Thanks for the response, I'll look into GPE.

The main things I currently use on my sharp rom 5600 is:
xmms - to stream internet radio stations.
kismet
opera web browser
the sharp email client and of course the other pim apps
keyring - to store important passwords
gaim
nmap
samba ans vnc  **though vnc isnt that important**

I hope these work or there is equivalant programs.
What web browser does OZ or GPE use?  You know of any problems with the programs I listed above?

Oh and one last important question:  My 5600 has that cache bug.  I once tried a kernel that did not include the workaround and while my zaurus ran 100% faster it quickly corrupted the filesystem.  Does OZ or GPE include the workaround?

I was wondering how you were getting on....

Where can I find this rom?

*EDIT*  OK, I think I found it, but it looks like it is only for the 5500.  Can someone explain this?

The code name for the 5600 is poodle (the 5500/5000D is a collie).

OK, so according to that thread I just use the 5500 rom on my 5600.  Cool, I'll try it out.

And wow, OZ is great!  It has become a lot more stable than it was when I tried it a year ago.  I haven't noticed any strange suspend behavior like I keep reading about but one thing does annoy me.  When I return fron suspend the baclkight is not turned back on.  I have to adjust it with the applet to turn it back on.  Is there a fix for this?

No that's not right, but from your comment it looks like you've chosen the poodle initrd.bin & zimage.bin anyway.

See here: http://www.hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/oz3...opie1.2.0.shtml

The Poodle (5600) and Collie (5500/5000D) releases are clearly marked and separated.
