Ah yes, the point card programs.  Seems like every store in Japan has those things.  I really ought to take advantage of them.

Kind of off of the original topic, but, since we\'re talking about purchases, does anyone know what kind of charges are incurred for bringing stuff (electronics, computer items, etc) bought in Japan back to the States?  Or shipping such items from Japan to the States?  Any links to information would be appreciated.

I plan to stay in Japan for a while, but I\'m wondering how much customs is going to charge me when I go back... I\'ve picked up quite a few gadgets and such  (

I personally prefer the C760/C860\'s builtin dictionary (sljisho) over  zten+edict... edict is nice, but I find the built-in dictionary to be more useful (for example, many entries include example sentences).

I agree and I\'d be really interested in formating edict to be used by sljisho. Haven\'t been able find anything about the sljisho dic format - anyone??

I\'m also a big fan of Point Cards - have about 5 or 6 now (including one for a bakery!!)

Heading up to Tokyo next week - gonna try to get some new accessories for the Z.

Yeah but it\'s much larger than the sqlite package - not good if your running ot of flash space

True, but I work in mysql on my desktop with php and I want to be able to carry my work around with me.
Maybe I can give sqlite a shot if the sql queries are similar

davidsan, congrats on the new machine. I am enjoying my new 860 too.
Here is my setup:
KOrganizer for appointments and todo (really needs fastload to be useful, so I added in the .desktop file) Acts a bit quirky, but I think its the best.
tkcAddressBook for contacts. I had to pay for it, but I wanted xml data and better handling of english contacts. Also imports old contacts from QT
Portabase for just about everything. It love this program. It also has a winblows version so the data can be viewed on the PC.
I keep all kinds of data in Portabase format on my CF card (1GB) and plug it in to my laptop to edit data at home.

I have a couple questions:
1. I want to get Apache/Mysql/PHP, but there are a few different pachages flying around and I\'m not sure what the best (most current) one is.
2. What is the best terminal app to load on the 860 as it doesn\'t come with one. I liked qkonsole, but it shuts down when you hit the Cancel key. Very bad if you are using VI and trying to enter commands. If anyone has a link to a good terminal ipk I would appreciate it.
3. Anyone know much about the Java ME on the 860? Is it a complete replacement for Jeode? There is a script that transfers evm commands to CVM.

Try embeddedkonsole-tw, it doesn\'t suffer from the Cancel key probelm, it also has support for Big5, euc, jis, sjis and UTF8 charsets. Doesn\'t have as many font selectinos as QKonsole but the charsets make up for it for me

It supports about 75-80% of the Jeode features - the evm script is a little flaky and I\'ve generally had better luck calling cvm directly. The biggest problem is that it doesn\'t have great Japanese support, there is a really cool app called babbletower (Japanese dictionary and flashcard app) that I can\'t use on Java ME cause it doesn\'t handle japanese fonts properly - it also has problems with selection indexes.

Hope I\'m not too off-topic here.  I have a 5500 that\'s been having problems lately, so I\'m considering a C760 or 860 (hence my presence here).  One of the 5500\'s problems is that Sagasu and Wajei stopped working, so I have to wonder: Will zten and kanjinirvana work on a 5500?

KanjiNirvana should work on a 5500 (and even the old 5000), though you  may need to install the Unicode font.  You can get the font from the old KanjiNirvana page at:

In what way did Sagasu and Wajei stop working?

In Sagasu, with Lookup Method set to by kanji, I would select a kanji in the middle pane, and never get any entries to show up in the bottom pane.  Likewise, with Lookup Method phonetic, and bottom menu set to hiragana, I would enter japanese, and never get any translations to appear.  On the other hand, with the bottom menu set to romaji I could enter english, and the japanese translations would appear!

This used to work, and stopped about the same time my CF cards stopped working; that might not be coincidence.  I\'ve reinstalled Sagasu and the edict with no luck.  I\'ve installed WaJEi in its place with no luck.

Time to reformat and reinstall Windows... er, wait, wrong platform (^_^)

Seriously though, the quickest way to fix the problem may be to start with a clean ROM... it\'s possible that you may have some corrupt files/libraries (I have no idea).  Of course, you may need an SD Card (since you said CF cards don\'t seem to work).

CF cards don\'t work, and I can\'t communicate through the cradle to upgrade the ROM that way, either.  That seemed to leave me with choice of sending it in to Sharp, or living with the problems.  But, hang on -- you\'re saying there\'s a way to flash the ROM using an SD card?  I didn\'t know that...

As it happens, I\'m going to be in Honolulu in a couple weeks.  It occurs to me that I might be able to find a store selling C860s there.  Anyone know?

Ah, right, I don\'t know if the 5500 models can be flashed via SD or not... I only have experience with the c7xx/c860 models. Sorry (T_T)

Btw, if you\'re thinking about buying a new Zaurus, I would highly recommend the C760 over the C860... unless you really want the translation software (which I feel doesn\'t work very well anyways). Otherwise the C760 is the same (albeit a different color), and it is less expensive.
