CF/SD which one is faster?
« on: February 04, 2004, 05:32:16 am »
I made divx file and it ran on internal rom just fine. After I moved to
SD card (lexar sd256) play back becomes a little bit jerky. There were
some hickups periodically. I don\'t have any CF card but will it run faster
than SD card?  (I don\'t want to sacrifice video quality anymore)
And I know there are high speed sd cards with higher price tag like lexar
30x sd card or sandisk ultra. Can Zaurus take advantage of so called
their high speed?
Any advice/information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

CF is faster.  Most of the movie players specifically recommend not using SD for storage.

It also depends which zaurus you have!

The 5500 writes a 30mb file in about 2 mins AFAICR.
movie playback suffers, and so does doom if the wads are on sd.

32x cards go no faster at all!

On the cxx0 devices the same 30mb file writes in about 20-]30 seconds,
on the same lexar card.  the 32x lexar card appears to be not much faster than the standard lexar card on the cxx0 devices.

I did start a thread on devnet where people tested the speeds of various cards on various machines.

Basically cf is faster than sd on all models, on the 5500 sd speed seems to be constrained by the bus, faster cards do not go any faster.

The cxx0 models (and I think the 5600 too) can support faster sd speeds, but cf is still faster on these models, but movie playback seems to be ok.

Peter.
Zaurus cl760, cacko QT rom. Zaurus sl5500 with TKCrom 1.0.
512mb Kingston cf card, 256mb Sandisk sd card, Lexar 256mb sd card.
Bluemonkey bluetooth card <-> Sony Ericsson k700i for gprs.
Buffalo WLI-CF-S11G wifi card. Haicom 303 mmf gps cf/seral card.

Did you know that MMC is much faster that SD on a Z.
I cant explain why, but from much Z experience believe me it\'s true.
SL 5000D, SL5500 - tkc rom / C760 - proto 2.5.1 - javab0y /Spectrum24 / Dlink DCF650w / Buffalo wli-cf-s11g / Origo Wifi / Compaq B21 Cf Modem / EagleTec CF 10-base ethernet / Various SD/MMC / Socket Bluetooth / VW Golf GTIT (debian integrated supercharger - honest) ;-) PPC2003.net with TomTom Nav 5 - TomTom is blinding GPS s/w - sorry but nothing on o/s comes close to TomTom (wish it did).

Thank you for all the adivce. I\'d better go with CF card for playing
movies. I have SL-5600 and may get some benefit from high speed
SD cards but don\'t want to pay much higher price.
BTW, It\'s stange that MMC is faster because I\'ve heard the opposite.
I want to try if I have one. Anyways, thank you very much for all the
information.
