you have to get bvdd ipk package from atty.jp called : bvdd_0.4.0-1_arm.ipk

then you have to install the mplayer which fits your kernel.
if you're still with sharp stock kernel, use mplayer-bvdd_1.1.5-1_arm.ipk

else if you have installed a special kernel with iwmmxt support, you should use mplayer-bvdd-iwmmxt_1.1.5-1_arm.ipk

you can then add mencoder_1.1.0-1_arm.ipk
if you wish to encode on your Z

there are at least two gui for mplayer :
zplayer
kino2

hope it helps...

It helps me!  That explains why mine doesn't work.  I installed the wrong verision of mplayer (though I did the other steps correctly).  I'll have to try again when I get home.

 Thanks 'darkloran' !
