Why Did I Buy This Thing? - Oh Yeah, I'm A Geek
« on: September 25, 2005, 11:08:27 pm »

Ok, I upgraded to OZ 3.5.3 and through days of frustration and combing through the forums I have managed to get my wifi card working, opera working, and even the camera.  I have moved on to trying to sync, and I am getting nowhere.

Here's the info:

sl-5500 - OZ 3.5.3

Windows XP Pro
trying to sync Outlook 2003 via Intellisync (from the updated Sharp Rom Package)

I have removed and reinstalled the software and drivers, verified the IP settings, but I still can't get the PC to talk to the 5500.  It just won't connect...

However, just to be clear, both the usbd and the wireless connections work fine, I can ping, ssh, surf, etc...

Help!!!

well, just to start off......

Im a newbie and you newbie should not dive into openzaurus.  as a newbie to a newbie, i created a tutorial on how to connect to the winxp with drivers and sync software.  zaurus is not for the regular and as the saying goes, "linux is fur the bright people."  go to my sig right under here and click on the zaurusvideo.  then click on the pda icon and scroll down to the opie connection section.  It tells you how to connect.  and just to make this clear, i dont use openzaurus ...i use sharprom.  More stable....eerrr...compatible.

Well newbie or not here I am.  I switched to OZ because a majority of what I read here said it would resolve my WiFi issues, which it did after some additional tweaking.  From there I moved on to surfing, and got that working as well, again, with help from this and other web sources.

My hope is that someone has moved beyond this point in my journey and would have some input that applies to the stated issue, thus saving me (hopefully) a few hours of troubleshooting.

In any event, since my (poor?) attempt at humor in the title of this post may have made the situation unclear, let me go into more detail...

I have sync'd this Z with the PC in question under the Sharp ROM with great success, however, since moving to the OZ 353 ROM, I have been unable to get the sync to work.

I have removed the drivers and software, and reinstalled them according to procedure.  After the install/reboot, the PC recognizes the device as new hardware and installs the drivers; it also prompts for additional drivers as expected when I switch over to "advanced" usb connection in I'sync Manager.  I also tried changing the hostname from collie to zaurus on the Z to match the default I'sync settings.  I verified the IP settings on both systems, yet it simply will not connect via I'sync.

I have tried the same procedure on another PC with the same results.  There is nothing in the logs on the PC or on the Z, so I am at a loss as to where to go from here.

Does anyone know of specific configuration differences between the Sharp ROM and the OZ 3.5.3 ROM that could be causing this issue?  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.  What port(s) is it trying to communicate over?  Basically - WTF?

-...

hmm......

winxp sp2.  I never realized that my instructions was not done to accomodate for this.  Maybee it is a firewall issue.  Not sure though.  The instructions was created for the old xp and i had tons of people tell me it works.  Perhaps i should give opie or openzaurus a shot just to update my info.

Intellisync (from the updated Sharp Rom Package)

Use the Intellisync & usb drivers from the old package (ROMs version 2.xx).

Thanks Lardman...

Ok, I did that, and wonder of wonders, I could communicate with the Z.  However, I take it that this version of I'sync is not compatable with Outlook 2003 since it refuses to find my outlook data files....  Arrrghhh

BTW, Do we know why the old version works and the new doesn't?

BTW, Do we know why the old version works and the new doesn't?

There are two parts to this - the usb drivers & the sync software.

Regarding the usb drivers, the new ones could probably be made to work if we alter the kernel config and specifically change the pid & vid which usbdcore (name?) returns when handling the usb connection.

The reason the new sync software doesn't work, and the old stuff does, is that Sharp moved over to a new binary database format (rather than the old xml format which was decoded and then OZ started to use).

Now there are tools available which will import and export from the new dtm database format, and a long long time ago (back in the days of the devnet) I did some work trying to find out how the communication occurs between the PC & the Zaurus - this is the hard bit I think, producing a dtm-xml compat layer has already been done (or at least is pretty much there).

So that's about the size of it,
