Have I Killed My Sl5500?
« on: September 26, 2005, 04:36:42 pm »
Hi there,

 I'd really appreciate some advice.

I have been running oz3.2 and 3.5.2 on my collie 5500 and have had
no problems flashing.  A couple of weeks ago I got a Viking 1GB SD card
and attempted to flash the Hentges 3.5.3 ROM and CardFS.  I had a couple
of false
starts because of formatting problems on my CF card, but now seem to be
stuck as my zaurus won't boot even if I reflash.  I've since tried
reflashing
plain oz3.5.2 and I get the same symptoms as when I try to flash the
hentges ROM.  I also get the same symptoms using a completely different
CF card.  These are as follows for the plain oz3.5.2 ROM.

On my Linux laptop (Slackware 9) my CF card looks like this:

bash-2.05b# md5sum /mnt/ide/*
90200156d80c1dbe3bc81a4ed295c65b  /mnt/ide/initrd.bin
d958df529a25ea5147cdb1ff0fac6e8a  /mnt/ide/zimage

and the checksums agree with the ones in
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstabl...00/md5sums.txt:
90200156d80c1dbe3bc81a4ed295c65b  opie-image.rootfs.img
d958df529a25ea5147cdb1ff0fac6e8a  zImage_collie-48-16

The zimage file does show up as zImage if I look at the card using
windows.

I follow the flashing procedure:

>   2. Make sure that the AC adapter is connected to the Zaurus and is plugged in.

it is.  Currently neither LED is lit.

>   3. Move the switch below the battery compartment to “REPLACE BATTERY.” Open the battery compartment lid. Make sure you DO NOT take the battery out.
>   4. Hold down the “C” and “D” keys on the Zaurus’ keyboard and press the “FULL RESET” button located on the lower-right side of the battery compartment.
>   5. Both the power and mail lights on the Zaurus should light up and stay lit up once you let go.

They do, and both stay on for about 3 minutes.  (I did have problems
before at this stage, but resolved them by using a different card and
making sure that the zImage file was named correctly.)

   7. After the green LED goes out, push the “FULL RESET” button in the
lower-right side of the battery compartment.

Both lights have gone out.  I press FULL RESET, and after a moment the
yellow LED comes of for about 4 seconds and goes off again.

   8. Replace the battery compartment lid and slide the battery
   replacement switch to “NORMAL OPERATION.”

I do this.  Then I try to boot by holding down the On/Off button but
nothing happens.

If I pull out the power supply and re-insert it, the yellow LED comes of
for about 4 seconds and goes off again.

Thinking back, it is possible that I pressed the FULL RESET button twice
with the C+D around the time the problems
started.

Can anyone advise me on what to do?  Does my unit need repair, and if
so, where in the UK can I get it done?

Any help much appreciated.

cheers,
Mark Webb

flip the battery switch and press D+P+ reset....maybe you can format it from there

You could try flashing an ospack file (the Sharp ROM), which will overwrite the entire 'ROM', then try flashing OZ again.

I've seen something similar with my c750 when I've flashed a kernel which is too big...

Si
C750 OZ3.5.4 (GPE, 2.6.x kernel)
SL5500 OZ3.5.4 (Opie)
Nokia 770
Serial GPS, WCF-12, Socket Ethernet & BT, Ratoc USB
WinXP, Mandriva

Hi Si,

Thanks for the advice.

I tried that using my 1GB CF card (my usual CF card was too small)

I downloaded the OSPACK from the sharp site, but when I tried
to flash it I got both LEDs flashing, which suggests I have the files wrong.
My CF card looks like this:

bash-2.05b# md5sum /mnt/ide/*
b643632b529bf8e7cd83e7eb53955c68  /mnt/ide/ospack

bash-2.05b# ls -l  /mnt/ide/*
-rwxr--r--    1 root     root     16777216 Sep 26 23:16 /mnt/ide/ospack

Do I need to call it something else, or are additional files required?

Also, the site said the OZPACK file was suitable for the USA SL5500 but I
bought mine in the UK.

thanks!
Mark

I don't know what the md5sum for the file should be I'm afraid. Anyone? The other possibility is that the card format doesn't agree with it.

Don't worry about the US/UK thing, it's to do with the availablility of the Euro symbol I think (I've flashed all sorts without troubles), you'll be flashing to something else soon enough anyway.

Success!  I now have the Sharp ROM.    Hopefully I can try to install Hentges again now.

Many thanks to those who've helped.

Best wishes,
Mark

did a new card fix it?

if so, does the old one work at all with it?
