2GB and larger SD cards have a new sort of DRM that the current drivers can't handle. 2GB MMC cards might work, but no has tried them with a Z AFAIK.

I also asked this in other thread...
Does this hardware limitation also apply for the 5500 CF slot???
I was thinking in a 4GB CF solely for my MP3/Videos....

lpetroni,
There is no hardware limitation to the Zaurii CF slot like the SD slot has. The only limitation of the CF slot whatsoever is speed related, and that's not because of a problem similar to that of the SD bay but rather simply a fact that the original intel strongarm processer in the 5500 can only handle so much bandwidth at one time. So your CF card most definitely will not perform NEARLY as fast in your Zaurus as it does in a card reader hooked to your PC.
I had been wondering about this very same thing for a long time and had just put off checking it out. So I just went and tested my 4gb hitachi microdrive (retail version) in the SL-5500 and everything seems fine. I copied a 120mb file from the 4gb CF card to the sdcard and then copied it back and it worked like a treat. (It shouldn't matter but in interests of full disclosure I'm using the original Crow Rom.) Also it shows up in the System Info area just as would be expected and is reporting the proper size and free space. You should be fine, and with prices being what they are right now, it's a darn good time to buy one.
Just make SURE you get a RETAIL version. Some of the OEM hitachi microdrives and most of the seagate microdrives have compatibility problems with all Zaurii models. To know the difference between the OEM version and Retail Hitachi Microdrives here's how to quickly identify them:
The RETAIL version of the Hitachi Microdrives ALWAYS come in a Blister Pack and if you look on the back of the package at the bottom you will see that it is actually distributed by "Pexagon Inc." They are a business partner that Hitachi uses to distribute all of their Retail products. In case you are buying a used one you can also determine that it's retail by looking at the labeling on the drive. The retail version is colored white and light blue and has the word "Microdrive" in big black letters and the word "Hitachi" in bright red letters.
The OEM version comes by itself sometimes even without a box of any kind in a tiny electrostatic bag. The label on the OEM Version is completely plain White all over except for the lettering which is Black.
The retail version is completely 100% compatible with ANY device that has a CF slot and can accept a CFII size card. (The main difference between CF1 and CFII physical formats is simply that the CFII is a much larger slot (about twice as thick as a CFI slot). Fret not however as every Zaurus since the SL-5000D will accept the CFII size cards!
That should cover your question, however if you want to get even more detailed info on the matter search for posts I've made recently about the Hitachi Microdrives and you can read until you go blind. (yup all my posts are this long. Actually this is a shorter one than usual by a long shot.)
Cheers,
