Newbie, Installing Software Off Of Cd
« on: October 05, 2005, 12:16:10 am »
I just got my zaurus today, and I want to know how to install software off the cd, when the Zaurus is in the cradle. Other suggestions for a Newbie(still using Sharp ROM, gotta wait till I get a CF card to switch to OZ) would be appreciated.

You have to copy the ipk files to the Zaurus and install from there I'm afraid.

I thought about writing a program which would handle this automagically (like what happens with .sis files with the Psion series 5, etc.) but it got put on the backburner I'm afraid.

Depends on which 'ROM' you're running.

In any case there should be some software along the lines of a connection manager app which came with the machine on the CD. For Sharp ROMs 2.xx there's an ftp server running on port 4242, for 3.xx there's samba.

I'm using v. 2.38. How do I get USB networking working? I put it in the cradle, and set up USB TCP/IP on the Zaurus, but Windows won't get an IP address on the USB network connection. Thoughts? Also, is it possible to sync w/ Kmail?

Have you installed the drivers which came on the CD (not the new ones which come with 3.10/can be downloaded)?

You have to set a static IP address for the connection unless you're running a DHCP server.

The easiest thing would be to download the whole Sharp 3.13 cd in a zip file from here:
[a href=\"http://[a%20href=]http://www.elsix.org/downloads/CD-v313.zip[/url]\" target=\"_blank\"]cd-v313.zip[/a]

You just need to install the USB drivers and the desktop software.

Install the Windows XP USB drivers first and I think it requires the installation of TWO separate instances of USB drivers so don't quit the adding new hardware dialog too soon. In fact, you might reboot and then try installing them again....if they are already installed it asks you if you would like to "uninstall" the drivers, cancel out of it then.

Then install the intellisync OR qtopia desktop software. Not both!

I downloaded 3.1, and updated the ROM on the Z itself. The computer is still not recognizing the Zaurus, and now I don't even have a USB network device.  I need some more instruction as to how to get this to work. I installed Qtopia, not Intellisync(don't use outlook). HELP!!!

I happened onto this thread too late to help, but: If you're going to go the OZ route, be aware that you'll have to have a network connection, be it a CF wifi card or a CF modem network card - there's no way to sync it to Windoze via usb. I found that out the hard way.

none at all? OK...I'll have to figure something out. What's the purpose of the cradle then? I'd like to use OZ but I need a CF card etc.

You can use ethernet-over-usb in exactly the same way as you were using it with the 2.38 'ROM' (in fact you use the same USB drivers as came with the 2.38 'ROM').

With the 3.xx 'ROM's there's an option to use a direct proprietary USB connection as well as the aforementioned ethernet-over-usb connection. I think this is what brashley46 is talking about (can't see the problem myself).
