We're All Looking For The Same Thing
« on: October 13, 2005, 08:25:18 pm »
I have been admiring the specs (other than the keyboard) of the Dell Axim X51v , and after checking the aximsite.com forums find that even though their specs are enviable (624 Mhz processor, 256 MB ROM, 16 MB video RAM, and (finally) persistent storage in MS Mobile 5.0) they seem to have the same complaints we do, plus a few extras.  (Axims seem to blow USB ports on 44 out of 305 motherboards!) Check out this thread:
Smokey Coincidence
and this one: Lethal Cradle Poll

(I am now happier that I do not have one of these Pocket PCs.) They also complain (as we do) about video performance (as compared to desktop video performance), their CF and SD cards seem to occasionally disappear (as some have said of their Zaurus's), tech support,  and WIFI difficulties.

So, I guess until we get a little further down the road, we have one of the better devices available. Plus, as we all know, Linux is more resistant to such problems as viruses (or is it virii? or virie?) Anyway, we all love to check the advances of hardware regardless of OS.

If only Sharp would make a 3100 with WIFI, bluetooth, and the 4" screen of the 6000, *AND* the latest Linux kernel!!

Well in the absence of built-in wifi & bluetooth and the particular screen, OpenZaurus does offer the latest kernel for your delectation: I'm running 2.6.14-rc1 with cpufreq support (dynamic cpu frequency scaling dependent on demand) at the moment.

I understand that 2.6.x is also working or work in progress on the newer models; more devs and testers welcome.

Yep. If sharp came out with this, I would sell my 6000 and buy it in a a heatbeat. Or course, if they do this, fate would hae it they would do something stupid like remove theusb host, which would be a dealbreaker for me.

Take a look at THIS which is available right now.  Wish I had the disposable income to buy it (maybe when the Democrats take over Congress and the Presidency and the economy gets going again).

Of course, it DOES have Windows but it looks amazing.

- Winbloze is a deal-breaker in a PDA.  It's not stable enough, comes with too much bloat, is heavy into customer-hostile DRM, and (winbloze aside) all that amazing capability comes with a painfully short battery life, compared to Hiro at least.  Imho it's not worth paying more than a laptop for something that's essentailly less functional as a PDA.
- But the idea is very cool.  A workstation that doubles as the occasional use PDA.  Charges in "workstation" mode.  No sync required!  You office is in fact completely in your pocket.  Very slick indeed.  I could see savvy manager-types falling all over themselves to get one of these things.
- It does have a keyboard, though, a must-have for this heavily command-line oriented user.
- I could also see getting one and putting Plain Ol' Linux on it.  That would sidestep most of the problems (wink)...
| I shed a tear for the passing of Hiroshi; he served me well
| Zaurus zealot since Nov 2002, PDA user since Oct 1991
| Replaced Z with UMID BZ February 2010

I hear the QQQ is very unstable hardware wise. The flybook, (Little bigger than a DVD case)  looks like a SWEET linux canadite! I want one!

Review with many photos:

I saw it for sale $3000, but with a DVD writer, windows, and 80gig HD. I want this for my HS graduation- in four years the price should be quite reasonable

I have also been looking at flybook for a while. But since Jobs announced switch to Intel I have a feeling it's not that far off before we get a Mac laptop/tablet of similar size. Then we'll finally have best of all worlds: great hardware, unix, mulitimedia and other great software, etc. It's probably worth a wait although if flybook was available right now and came with a stable linux installation (not semi-working drivers as I'm guessing very few people have tried linux on it but with working drivers for all the connectivity options as well as tablet) I would go for it even at $3000.

I was looking over the gamepark gp2x f100 again.... and thinking about things sharp could learn from it.

Besides the oft mentioned video out and usb2-

dual core arm...seems like loads o power, given the media types it supports. Might be a good thing?

"AA" battery powered. A very good idea, in the sense that the device won't become worthless due to the failure of a limited production run battery.
Maybe it would be possible to build a "AAA pac" that snaps into a z's battery compartment? Though multiple Lithium batteries, and an A based charger, would be a more expensive and cumbersome, though easier solution.
