Looking For Feeds
« on: October 17, 2005, 10:25:05 am »
It's been quite a long time since I've played with GPE, and now I'm having troubles finding software.  Can anyone point me to other feeds?  Also, is Ipaq software compatible with GPE?  I see a lot of mention of Ipaq in these threads and wonder if there are Ipaq feeds somewhere that I could use.

Some specifics I'm looking for:
- Wellenreiter II
- Firefox or other browsers
- Email client
- working Gaim (the one in the feed has the config screen scrunched up, so I can't see what I'm putting in)

Also I seem to be having problems with ipaq-sleep.  It is being run at boot, but doesn't seem to be using any of the settings in /etc/ipaq-sleep.conf.  The screen goes completely blank after several minutes, but it never dims.  I have commented out the apm line in device_table, but otherwise do not know what else to look for?

I guess you're using a 5500?

Have a look at koen's up-to-date feed (there's a thread in this bit of the forum about it).

Yes and no. They would be compatoble, but for the fact that the iPAQ feeds are still hard-float based.

Not sure this is available at all. Best talk to mickeyl to see if he's going to update the X11 version.

Dillo, minimo? gpe-minibrowser should be in koen's feed; firefox is in OE but I'm not sure where you can find a binary.

- Email client

Sylpheed?

I think this has been fixed recently, again, take a look in koen's feed, otherwise you could ask hrw to build it for the upgrades feed.

You can use prismstumbler (or it's tiny frontend gpe-aerial) to do what WR2 does. Florian and Alberto should be releasing a new version soon.

You need a version of bl which will work on your Z.

Try installing the bl ipk from here: http://people.bath.ac.uk/enpsgp/Zaurus/bl/ and let me know if it works for you (just type 'bl' on the command line and it should say on & give you the backlight setting (0-255). You can also use it to set the backlight (which is what ipaq-sleep does) like so:

bl on
bl off
bl 100

etc.

Si

P.S. Hmm, it might not be happy installing as this is for the ARM5 arch (and you're ARM4 if you have a 5500). You could try downloading and sticking the bl binary in /usr/bin, but it might not work due to instruction set differences.

I downloaded the BL ipk, but when I told it to install that file, ipkg decided it knew better and instead installed http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/sfeed/bl_0.0c...0924-r0_arm.ipk.

Unfortunately this one gives me the error "Unable to open /dev/touchscreen/0".  Under /dev/ I have 'ts' and 'sharp_ts'.  I made the directory 'touchscreen' and linked 0 to sharp_ts, but now I get the error "Unable to read backlight: Invalid argument".  Guessing this just ain't gonna work...

I'm hoping to do the 2-level powersaver like Opie has... dim the screen after X seconds, turn the screen off (but do not suspend) after Y seconds.  Even changing the default screen-blanking interval from the default 10 minutes down to 3 minutes would be helpful, but as I said, ipaq-sleep appears to be completely ignoring the settings in /etc/ipaq-sleep.conf.

By the way, yes I am running on an SL5500.  Used to have a sig line here, wonder what happened to it?

I tried gpe-mini-browser, but it wouldn't even display Google properly.  Where is the OE feed at?  I can't find the link off the homepage anymore.

Also tried sylpheed.  It has all kinds of problems displaying on my 240x320 screen.  I can't even see most of the options and had to manually change accountrc.

Tried gpe-aerial.  It couldn't find any of the numerous wap's in my building, including the one I'm currently connected to.  Also crashed when I was trying to look at different options.  The reason I wanted wellenreiter is because I also use roadmap and these programs will talk to each other.

Another note to make the ipaq-sleep discussion more interesting.  I killed all instances of ipaq-sleep, yet after 10 minutes the screen still blanked.  Obviously ipaq-sleep is not being used at all, so what IS actually controlling the screen blanking?

bl-0.0cvs is *only* for the iPAQs, hence my writing the new version (which I foolishly named bl-0.0 (which is overridden by the cvs version).

No matter what you do, you won't get the iPAQ version to work on your Z. Install my version (though I'll have to think about the ipkg options to force its installation), or just replace the existing /usr/bin/bl with the one from the download dir/ipkg file.

Because it tries to use bl as I said earlier. The blanking you're getting is probably the unit suspending.

ipaq-sleep uses xset to tell the xserver when to perform powersaving, plus it calls bl to change the backlight setting.

The source for ipaq-sleep (and all of the rest of GPE) is available on gpe.handhelds.org so you can have a look at what it does yourself (it's a very simple program).

I don't think the screen-blanking is from the unit suspending, because my wifi stays active and I am able to continue using my ssh connection to the zaurus, or open a new session.

I tried installing BL again with -V9.  Looks like to feed packages are arch=arm, and this one here is arch=armv5te.  Probably explains why ipkg refuses to install it.

I downloaded the ipk file (it turns out to be regular deb package). I extracted only the binary "bl" and copied it onto my Zaurus 5500.

It worked perfectly! (despite of package name saying that the binary is compiled for ARM5).

Now, you can package into the feed. I would put (both ipaq's and sharp's bl) into device-dependent feed (... /feed/3.5.4/feed/machine/).

In fact the new version should work on all the devices (iPAQ included) so it can replace the iPAQ only one eventually - just needs some testing to ensure that it works with all the devices.
