Prob Mounting Sd Card

Hi,

I`m quite new to the Linux and Zaurus community, so be gentle...

I`ve problems installing an SD card on my OZ 3.5.3 Opie. In the FAQ it is said that SD card are mounted automatically. Well, in my case they aren`t.
And since my SD is my only connection the the outer world (I haven`t figured out how to connect to the local VPN or any other network with the Zaurus yet)...
When I try to mount the SD by 'mount /media/card' I get:

Mounting /dev/mmcda1 on /media/card failed: No such device or address

I already tried the 3.5.2 (opie) version of OZ, and the 3.5.3 (gpe). No problem there.

My specs:
Zaurus SL-C860 with OZ 3.5.3 Opie
SanDisk 512MB SD card
Planex GW-CF11X CF WiFi card

Openzaurus 3.5.3
opie-image-c7x0-20050411221036.rootfs.img
zImage-c7x0-20050411221036.bin

/dev/mmcda1 on /media/card

You're running a 2.6.x kernel on your Z I assume (Opie image). What does 'uname -r' say?

You may need to edit /etc/fstab. Inside there are two lines which try to mount  onto /media/card. Remove the one which says /dev/mmcda1 and keep the one which says /dev/mmcdblk1 (spelling?).

This is a hack as the scripts should be able to handle both entries, but they can't (at least they can't in the 3.5.3 image, there have been updates since).

After that, eject the card and re-insert it and then wait a few secs and see if it's mounted.

Yup, running Kernel 2.6.11

I edited the /etc/fstab but it still doesn`t work. Mounting /media/card now gives me:

mount: Mounting /dev/mmcblk0p1 on /media/card failed: No such file or directory

In /dev there are no mmc devices but mmcda, mmcda1 and mmcda2.
btw, I don`t find 'sdmgr' on my Zaurus. That should be responsible for the automounting SD stuff, I think.

Any Idea?

Thanks for your help,

but I switched back to the original Sharp ROM this morning... less trouble with SD and WiFi card and right now the Japanese Input Method is a great help... yeah, I know, I`m lazy.

I will come back to OZ when my work here is done (and I really have the time to play around with my Zaurus). So again, thanks a lot, and greetings to the OZ devel team and community - you`re doing a great job there.

The trick appears to reinsert the card everytime you wake up the Z. Inserting the card when the Z is suspended and then turning it on seems to result in the "unable to mount card" issue for me. But if I start my Z, then insert the card it's detected fine.

ACK. I'm having trouble with my SD and my CF-card.
dmesg starts with
wrong magic
mmcda: mmcda1
FAT: unable to read boot sector
mmcda: mmcda1
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev:3c:04, iso_blknum=16,block=32
mmcda: mmcda1
...
.

Kernel: 2.4.20 cause no networking yet just the OZ OPIE 3.54RC

cardctl tells me:
Socket0 there is a 3.3V 16-bit PC Card
Socket1 : no card.

But both cards are mounted and accessible.
SD is a Kinston 1GB Elite Pro (50x)
CF is a Trancend 1GB CF card (45x).

When removing/reentering the CF the applet in the taskbar interacts, with the SD card it doesn't. But it is the SD card that is working properly. I always flash from SD.

I'm having the same problem Marc is having on my SL5600 (PXA250). The toolbar app for mounting and unmounting cards (sorry, I'm weak on vocabulary) refuses to recognize the SD card in its slot, or to start it up. It reports the socket empty no matter what you do. Oddly, the system info app reports it correctly, the file manager can read it and find files, usw.

Also the media player plays mp3 files back at too high a speed and there's some bit of flakiness about the cancel button suspend/resume. But not as much flakiness as 3.5.3. I'd be more specific but I'm still poking at it trying to figure out what happens.

Upgrade to the latest kernel - see pinned thread or posts on openzaurus.org

I've no idea about the SD issue on 2.4.xx.

Card applet in 3.5.4-rc is for CF cards only.

Kernel 2.4.xx on Zaurus report two CF slots on each machine - nevermind does it has one CF (5000, 5500, 5600, c7x0, c1000) or two (c3000, c3100).

Okay. That explains the SD problem. Do you have any clue where to look for the settings regarding the CF? With the commandline tools the SD card works properly, the CF card fools around... Sometimes I can, sometimes I cannot save stuff on the CF card. But not everything and not everytime...

And thx for the information regarding the card applet.

Could you give more detail on your problem... because I'm using the new card applet to eject the CF-card and I'm not having any problems like that. It works fine on my collie and poodle... no data loss or file corruption.

I am however curios if we will get the SD-card applet back in the final release?

greg2: currently no plans to support SD in pcmciaapplet for 2.4 kernel machines. User can remove pcmciaapplet and install old cardmon applet to get sd/cf in taskbar.

Personally I don't install that applet on my Zauruses.
