Lotus Notes Connectivity And Voip

Almost made my mind for the new C3100, two issues remain:

Lotus Notes connectivity: I remember that Notessync was available, but then the site and the application never went further than ROM2.x, Apparently the guy who developed "gave the code to the world" and then no further development. Anyone knows what happened with NotesSync or what other application can sync with Notes 6.5?

VOIP: Despite the call for a zaurus version of Skype, I think there are not many applications for VOIP. What can you recommend that has the type of services Skype has (PC to Phone or receiving calls). Any thoughts here?

Please help.... when I see there are no options on this two issues I start thinking on an Axim. or a Treo. I love the zaurus and specially the new edition, but this two are big issues for me.

I spent a reasonable amount of time on Notes access as it is crucial to me as well. Neither direct syncing nor web access worked anywhere near adequately. However, I found alternatives that were actually better for me.

First, you can have Notes forward all your mail to a free POP account and work off that when out of the office. You loose a bit of information in the forwarding, but generally it is fine.  

Second, remote access your desktop and work off it using the Z as a terminal. This is the best solution for me, no syncing needed. Dialup access was tolerable, but with the new Motorola E815 and Verizon's 3g network I have DSL-like access speeds in most urban areas of the country. I connect to the phone with the Socket bluetooth dongle, which uses vastly less power than WiFi. I can sit on the net for hours nights and weekends when minutes are unlimited without running down the batteries in the Z or the phone.

If your office machine is behind a firewall, you'll have to talk your network admin into opening up a TCP port for you to connect directly. Most, like mine, will be cautious of the security issues. So I had to find another way. There are a lot of remote access services that will go through the firewall and not upset network admins (as much). GoToMyPC seemed best for a long time, but I like LogMeIn better these days. However, they all seem to require java, and there is not adequate java plugin support for any of the web browsers for the ARM platform.

So -- I use qtrdesktop on the Z to access my home WIn XP desktop, then use my home desktop Firefox with java to connect to my office desktop. Actually, I keep a VMWare W2K 2000 server running in a virtual machine on my home desktop customized with screen sizes and links and so forth for channeling the remote access and use it. I go from my Z1000 to Windows XP to virtual W2K server to office Win XP desktop to Notes network server, and with the new Verizon broadband anywhere, it is actually about a responsive as a one-jump remote connection and quite liveable.

Cheap ubiquitous remote access is on the verge of making syncing obsolete.

Wow!! A lot of work to access your Notes. Thanks for the advice, but I live in Costa Rica and 3G has a long way to go here. Just got rid of TDMA (no Inet) and GSM Internet access is just starting. My best chances are with Wi-Fi hotspots either at malls, the local McDonalds, or at client sites (I carry usually my pocket D-Link router).

With notes I found an application that syncs Notes with Outlook (doublelook at http://www.companionlink.com/dl4notes.htm), and I use sync with outlook from the regular Zaurus software that came with my SL-5500. I guess I would have to stick with that for now. Thanks anyway for taking the time to write your detailed explanation, but I am looking for something that allow me to work offline and then syncronize, as down here I can not be always online.

Related to this, is there a way to access small LN databases directly from zaurus? I guess if so, I could use a local nsf on the hard disk and sync it from notes directly....

As for VOIP, I've heard of Kphone, but what commercial service can I use with that? I've heard that I can connect point to point, but is there a commercial service as Net2phone, Skype or Vonnage that I could use. Any thoughts on this?

You need a SIP phone service provider. Vonage provides SIP phone service. Skype does not. If you do some research, there are many commercial companies offering SIP phone service...

If you bcc everything you send to the same POP account, you'll have everything offline.

Notes has eased up on keeping its databases effectively if not officially proprietary recently, and Google and X1 search engines for Windows (but not on the Z) can now index Notes databases, but this only helps when using remote internet access like I outlined earlier.

About VOIP, I have tried the following SIP providers:
voipbuster : they offer free communications for some countries. i didn't succeed to make it work with kphone. I can be connected to the network, but if i tried to call a fixed line, the communication just stop.
FWD : it works well with kphone, but do not offer yet connection to PSTN networks. free.
Netappel : french equivalent to voipbuster. no SIP parameter yet.
SIPGATE : last but better and the only one that works for me with a good voice quality, work like a charm with the Z. The only phone number they offer are located in germany or UK...
If you search in the 6000 section of this forum you will find a very long thread about VOIP for the Z, some are using FWD to call 1-800 number (it is possible) and then use a pre-paid card.

I tried others (callventure, gizmo, wengo) that have desktop client (windows for callventure and Win/linux for the 2 others), but i didn't succed to be connected to their network with kphone on the Z.

The voice quality with the Z and SIPGATE is really good and sometimes better than the desktop SIPPhone of the others network i tested.

Notes Mail isn't too difficult to handle, either via forwarding to a pop account, or if your Domino server offers POP or IMAP (both of which are options in Domino).  However, the Notes calendaring&scheduling is another matter entirely.  I posted a while back about it, but haven't come up with any viable options to sync a Notes calendar with Ko/Pi (or any other Z pim for that matter).  Notes does not have an option to export to iCal (which would probably be the simplest solution), and I haven't gotten anywhere yet trying to update NotesSync (still something I'm considering, if I can ever carve out time).

If anyone has other ideas, let's hear 'em.

I use a mac and lotus notes... to get syncing working..i sync notes with lipsync to my mac's ical (only mainly using it for calendar entries), then sync ical use zmacsync with the Z calendar.. its a while but it works ok...

I just read that TkPhone from The Kompany works with Net2phone. Anyone has tried this? Does it work on a SL-5500 or is this too slow of a processor. Has anyone tried this software on the new c3XX?

JUST TO LET YOU KNOW HOW I AM USING LOTUS NOTES, in case someone finds this of help:

1. Configuration:
PC: Fujitsu P2100 / 512 RAM / 60GB HD / W2k / Lotus Notes 6.5.4 for corporate email, ToDos and Calendar / Outlook 2003 for personal email accounts.
Zaurus: SL-5500, TKC ROM 1 as base with Cacko Latest on top. Using Intellisync for ROM 3 (latest for this model I believe).

2. Lotus Notes, Outlook and Zaurus Intellysinc all set up normally, Intellysync set up to sync with outlook, no problem here.

3. I got an application called DoubleLook from CompanionLink Software Inc. that basically does replication between outlook and other software, from what I remember, it does Palm, Lotus NOtes, Act Goldmine. So I installed this and basically set up Companion Link to sync with the local copy of the LN database of my mail. I guess It could work with any NSF that has calendaring and ToDo's. The email I am using to sync is my personal accounts, no sync here. The URL of companion link is:
