Compactflash Card Info Database
« on: October 28, 2005, 06:40:54 am »
In last few days I was thinking about creating database with informations about CompactFlash cards (maybe will expand it to PCMCIA ones too). Basically it would contain informations from 'cardctl info' output + information about preferred driver (kernel module) for it. And ofcourse field for user note.

I want to split driver info into 2.4 and 2.6 part (there is no bt950_cs for 2.6).

Few functions will be provided:
1. adding card into database
2. browsing database
3. searching

later probably also generating pcmcia-cs config and generating 2.6 device_table entries.

What do you think about it? Do you see any use for it? Will someone fill it?

I wouldn't mind adding in the card dimensions - for things like wifi cards this would be a useful resource so people can choose the smallest one, etc.

While I'm on about wifi cards, what about adding their power demands too?

lardman: I'll think about it.

Currently everyone can see current dump: http://www.hrw.one.pl/cf_database/

It contain data from pcmcia-cs 3.2.8 and OZ packages. Linux 2.6 driver is set to the same one as in 2.4 (except bt950_cs cards).

Actual todo is:
- Edit form (restricted access)
- Add form (free access)
- dimensions (in/cm)

This seems like an excellent idea, moreover, from a simple user point of view, I would do it as a general hardware database. I think if the database requires the correct input to process, it would do as a "zaurus certified" hardware database, like the one SUSE used to have.

Want to make easier to own and use a zaurus - thats the way to go. It could even have a "report your hardware" part, so that it would be a constant poll to see where the purchasing power is going, as an input for developer groups to decide how to priorize resources when deciding what would have more interest for the community.

Regards,

Otto

Otto: it will remain CF/PCMCIA database.

To get info which USB peripherials works with Linux you can look on http://www.linux-usb.org/ (modules should be provided by distro which you run on Zaurus).
Serial attached devices are other thing because everything can be attached here.
IrDa attached devices are long list too.
Bluetooth attached devices can probably be checked somewhere too.

And this wont be limited to Zaurus machines only - think about Jornada, iPaq users (and other LinuxPDA with CF/PCMCIA slots).
