Some Questions About Memory Management
« on: October 31, 2005, 11:46:33 pm »
Hello, I just installed cacko 1.23 on my sl-c3100, I would like some explications about memory management and explications please. I understand that the 3100 has 128 ram and 4 Gb of hd. Now when I installed cacko I partitioned and putted that the root partition would be 19 Mb (lite) it showed 121 Mb avalaible ( I supose the remaining 7 Mb are lost like went we format a computer hd, it always shows a little less) so in short I should have :

19Mb - root partition used for read only cacko files
100Mb - that would become /home for installing files
4 Gb internal hd

but then my asking is that when I start cacko I can see in the system info panel that there is
63.7 Mb of total memory
10.2 Mb of temporary storage
3.9 Gb of internal disk

so the internal disk seems very fine, but then I don't see the 19 Mb root partition nowhere, also there is suposed to be around 100 Mb free ram, but I see 63 total memory ? and what is temporary storage used for ? also when I install ipk I chose internal memory, but even if I install big files I see nowhere the numbers changing...  '-_-

some clarifications please ?
also can someone help me out with my wifi please ? (check other post)

Also when I install a ipk I have the choices of Program Area, CF or SD... can I install to internal hd ? or I must manually install to internal hd ? also Program Area I guess is the 128 ram of the Zaurus ? anyway, I would like some general explications thanks.

It says that the lite version need to install the proper kernel modules from the feed to support internal storage, usb, etc...

the mirror feed on http://web.mol.ru/~zaurus/feed/ doesn't seem to be working (at least I can't log to it with firefox) I'll check those later, maybe my memory strange behavior is because I don't have yet those kernel modules. Is there a list of the modules I need to install exactly ?

i think that the 63mb of memory are your RAM (the memory used to launch programs)
temporary storage is normal, never used by an user, but normal
i'll verify tonight if my 3100 react as the yours, but there is no utility of any kernel module to see the space

just if you are very anxious about that, just launch a console and type df -m you'll have all the mounted devices with the empty space (and no ram)

for installing applications on the HD, basically it is not possible, because of the drive isn't in the right format (ext2 or ext3), but maybe with some tweaks and a manual install... but carefull with this, the sharp rom love his 3 partitions

Just a question for you:
Did you notice a reduced autonomy with your 3100 and the new Cacko? mine reduced by half (from 8h to 4h)

You can install applications on HD, and it is not very difficult to do. I have kept hdd3 as vfat ( to keep sharp happy) and have hdd4 as ext3. Now I can install everything on Hdd4 - and it is not getting lost, even if I have to completely reformat hdd3 ( after a potential full system loss...)

If you want to do this, here are the steps

- go to console
- su
- unmount hdd3
- launch fdisk
    - delete partition 3
    - create smaller partition 3
    - change type of partition 3 to vfat
    - create partition 4
    - write partition table
- reboot
- format partition 3
- format partition 4
- change etc/fstab ( include partition 4)
- make root r/w
- create directory hdd4 on root
- mount partition 4

and you are done!

Well first of all, the C3100 does not have 128MB RAM.  It has 128MB of ROM, 4GB hard drive, and 64MB of RAM.

The RAM is the memory used when running programs and is not used to store any data.  The Cacko ROM is installed to the ROM and is known as the "program area" when installing IPKs, this is the 100MB of "/home" that you have, as well as the 19MB where cacko actually runs from.

I hope this helps clear some things up.

humm, now is a little more clear. I have 128 rom, 64 ram and the hd. The 64 ram I can see it, is used to execute programs, fine, then the 128 rom I have 32 root folder (not using lite anymore) and 89 home wich makes 121, but then I know that when you format and partition a hd some Mb disapear, so then I'm very fine with those 7 ghost Mb, I think that is normal. And the 10 Mb of temp storage ? where it is hosted, inside the ram, or the rom or the hd ? I just want to know better my Zaurus.

As for lesser battery usage, I don't know, before the 1.23 I didn't use my 3100 really, I was mostly using my 700, so I can't compare, I know that the sharp rom clocks automatically the cpu depending upon what you do, so if you do nothing it will underclock the cpu, if you open an application the sharp rom will put the cpu to normal speed, thus prolonging battery life. On the cacko rom on the other hand, the cpu speed doesn't change automatically, it stays always at standard speed, then is normal it uses more battery, even worse, you can overclock it, then shorten life span. My sugestion is that you try to underclock it for a day and try to see how long it stays.

I have got a second battery (one of a 860) it seems to work very fine with the 3100, now I have readed that you can get an external battery charger and change the battery on the run, I will get one, but I want to be carefull, I don't want to fry my internal battery charger as my 700  to use my 700 I'm using the 3100 to charge the 700 battery, not very confortable. Also, I have a PSP, is very confortable(no need for several chargers) as I use the charger of the PSP on my 3100 and it works wonderfull.

also as for installing ipk on the hd, I have founded a very confortable solution, I install the ipk's on the home and then I move the dictionary and big files under /hdd3 and I just do ln -s and it works very well, I don't need to format nothing at all. so for exemple, I have zdict installed but the dictionarys are under /hdd3/dict1 same goes for slJisho and kioku dojo. It suits me very well, I have nearly all the applications I desire on my zaurus and I'm using 51 Mb of the 89 avalaible for my home, that means I can still install more apps without caring for space. On my 700 space is a real trouble, I try to install the ipks into my sd card and even then I must select the programs I want and what not, because I have trouble fitting all of them.
