Put Japanese On Cacko 1.23
« on: November 01, 2005, 02:53:21 am »
Hi, just a small post for all those installing japanese on their cacko 1.23 I have just followed the guide on
http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko-jp-howto.html
everything works except Zstyle

Once you have everything installed and is only displaying mojibake then you must do one of these 3 :

1 switching to japanese locale works, but have plenty of japanese around, or

2 changing zh_TW Locale works also, but the english text is way too small, or

3 hiding the Helvetica Fonts works and is the one I recomend despite the fonts behing a little less readable,

I have installed 1.23 on my sl-c3100 and then I can't say if Zstyle troubles are because of the new version or the 3100, but the fact is that Zstyle is able to change the colors but not the fonts, any font change in Zstyle seems to have no effet, the mojikabe remains.

I wrote the FAQ, and have just today noticed that 1.23 is available. I'll be updating ASAP.

The reason zstyle isn't working is that it has a check to see which model it is running on, and I haven't added the 1000, 3000, or 3100 yet. I'll have it fixed soon, hopefully.

Put Japanese On Cacko 1.23
« Reply #2 on: November 16, 2005, 11:08:02 pm »
My concern is the Japanese kernel installation step. Is it necessary to install this kernel that is designed for 1.22 on the new 1.23 ROM? This causes no problems? Here is some background:

My Sister-in-law is visiting from Tokyo. She is a native English speaker, but lives in Japan. I'm upgrading her C760 from the original Japanese ROM that came on it. She wants to primarily work in English, but be able to use Japanese tools when she wants to. Here's what I've done so far:

1) Installed the Cacko 1.23 Full
2) Using the Cacko Mirror, installed Japanese-support 1.1
3) Using the Cacko Mirror, installed Japanese-dict 1.0-2
4) removed helvetica by doing:
Code: [Select]
cd /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/fonts
su
mkdir oldfonts
mv helv* oldfonts
reboot

I seem to now have the Japanese input methods, but when I go to a Japanese site with Opera, I'm still getting the bad characters instead of Kanji. The Japanese dictionary is nowhere to be found, and I'm not seeing a "Language" icon in Settings.

So, is the missing step the Japanese Kernel? If so, is there a version built from the 1.23 source?

No, a different kernel is not necessary for 1.23.

Getting Opera to work with Japanese requires some modifications to Opera's configuration file; take a look at: http://www014.upp.so-net.ne.jp/boxer-j/opera7.html

Thanks for the link, ashikase. I'll modify my Opera conf file now.

I still need to figure out why the dictionary isn't working.

I have tried to installed japanese-support-c1k and japanese-dict in my c1000. The japanese input works without a problem. However, there is no icon to run the japanese-dict at all. Does anyone knows how to run it?

I'm so frustrated :-(

No matter what I do, I can't get the japanese dictionary to work without the squares. I gave up on version 1.23, as nobody has responded to my requests about a Japanese kernel (version without the remapped keyboard keys). Here's the process I went through:

1) merged J kernel into 1.22 build (used initrd.bin and updater.sh from 1.22 install, tools.tar from 1.22-J install)
2) flashed
   Installed packages:
3) japanese-support ipk
4) sldict-fonts ipk
5) japanese-dict ipk
6) translator ipk
7) translator-ej-data ipk
8) translator-je-data ipk
9) cacko-qtopia-rom-hotfix_1.22a ipk
10) zstyle ipk

I switched the fonts using zstyle, and the translator works great. However, the Japanese dictionary icon is nowhere to be found. Also Address Book will no longer launch (which seems odd). After digging around the file system a bit, I found "/home/QtPalmtop/bin/slgdbk". It seems to launch the dictionary, but all the menus are just squares.

I've also tried a clean flash of this procedure WITHOUT zstyle, and just removed the helvetica fonts. slgdbk is still just showing the mojibake.

Also, in the instructions linked at the top, there is mention of "languages" icon in Settings. I have never seen this, so I guess that isn't an option in 1.22 or 1.23?

Since my Sister-in-law is heading back to Japan tomorrow, I guess I'll just have to switch her back to her Japanese ROM (I did NAND backup before all the flashing).

If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.

Zstyle for 3000 didn't work on my 3100 zaurus. When I rebooted everything was so slow that i had to remove zstyle from the system.  Is there a new version of zstyle somewhere?

Did anyone suceed in adding japanese language support, i.e.  typing japanese, using dictionaries, to cacko 1.23 ? Is there a good recipe besides removing helvetica font (i really don't like lcfont) and changing zh_TW, ja locale ?

This zStyle package that everyone is talking about for the 3k/3100 - is it the one I built and is referenced in the Japanese Howto? (zstyle_1.4.1_slc.1_arm.ipk) If so, it will absolutely not work on the Cxx00 zaurii for font changes. (There is an installation script that references the different model types and nothing newer than an 860 is in there). Also, I suspect rebuilding it for the newer Zs will be difficult - I think the module that allows you to mess with the fonts is kernel dependent. The 860 had the same kernel revision as the last supported Z, so it worked fine. The newer Zs have an upgraded kernel, so they'll require a re-compile. (YMMV - it's been a very long time since I looked at it.)

On the other hand, if it *isn't* the one I built, where did you get it? I'd very much like to take a look at any newer versions.

Well, I checked out the zstyle package (zstyle-c3000_1.4.1) off of Meanie's site, and the scripts appear to have been properly modified for installation on the 3000 (OTOH, I'm still listed as the package maintainer, despite not having made that package  )

It tries to use the same library as the one for the 860s - which doesn't appear to work. I suspect it will have to be, at a minimum, recompiled.

EDIT. Nevermind - I've installed it on a C3000 (stock rom jp1.11) and it appears that it might actually work.

Further testing is required, an update to my Howto may be in order.

Hello Kahm!
zstyle-c3000_1.4.1 is the one I tried to install but the system was awfully slow so i decided to remove it. It would be nice to use it though in order to customize the fonts properly. Lcfont by default everywhere in all applications is quite ugly.

Well, I'm mucking with a 3000 right now. Testing this sort of thing tends to involve a lot of resetting back to factory default

I may end up backing up my 3100 and experimenting with it, but as it's my main Z, I'm reluctant to play with it too much...

When you say the system was slow, what do you mean specifically? I've got zstyle on my 3100 (Cacko 1.23 Lite, without Japanese software yet) and it seems to be working okay. The font modification seems to working normally as well.

As for the 3k, it seems that for the stock rom, setting it to an English locale and using zStyle to re-enable the Japanese fonts for input seems to work much better than using the Stubear's translation script.

More testing to be done.
