Help : C3000 Don't Boot
« on: November 01, 2005, 10:47:18 am »
Hello Zaurus World,
My Zaurus 3000 has the original Sharp system.

I installed xqt-gtk-jumbopack_0.4.3-0.7_arm.zip from http://hplx.mine.nu/daniel/zaurus/xqt/ and firefox_0.9-2_arm.zip from http://www.chuckster.org/zaurus/, both with command line ipkg install xxx.ipk and both installs said ok.

Then I rebooted the Zaurus. I wish I hadn't because now I'm stuck in the white screen with 'SHARP' in red and something in japanese.
The bottom line is blinking whith a line that repeats itself fast. It reads something like
grep : /var/lib/pcmcia/stab: No such file or directory
I'm not sure exactly because it's very fast and so it's very hard to read.

I'm not sure either if the problem is caused by X/Qt at all because I hadnt rebooted my Zaurus for a while, but I didn't mess with the system recently (I just remapped some keys with keyhelper).

I desperately need assistance.
Can you help me in rebooting the Zaurus again ?

Thanks
Manu

Now it's worse.
I tried and remove the battery, wait for 10 seconds, press the reset button, put back the battery and lock the door.
When I press the "On" button, the screen just blink once, but the Zaurus doesn't start at all.
I promise I won't touch anything but now I'm in even bigger trouble

Manu,

can you access the flash menu ?
If yes, you could try a factory reset to japanese.

If not, can you access the diag menu ?

Can you boot to command line ?

Please give us some more information.

Hi Marc,
I managed to boot to command line (with D+.
The file "/var/lib/pcmcia/stab" exists and contains :
-----------------------------
Socket 0: empty
Socket 1: ATA/IDE Ficed Disk
            ide   ide_cs  0             hda       3       0
-----------------------------
I mounted /dev/hda1, /dev/hda2, /dev/hda3 and /dev/mmcda1 and save some files (includding /etc/*, /hdd3/Documents/Settings/* and my documents) just in case.
I thought about uninstalling X/Qt and Firefox but I didn't found ipkg anywhere.
What else can I do ?
If I factory reset to japanese, will I lose all the software installation and configuration I made so far ?

thanks for your help

Manu

Manu,

OK, i take this as good news. Your Zaurus seems to be
healthy and booting, so you don't have a hardware issue
there.

Bad news is that it looks like you're not having a backup

Sure, after a reset everything is blank, clear, new, reset-ed.
You may try to save some data / applications with a simple
tar on a memory card.

Even for a Zaurus, the old mantra is valid: Backup early, backup often !

Try to save your data, perform a reset and your Zaurus should
be back to work again.

Ok I will reset tomorrow.
Fortunately I daily backup of all my data. I did a system backup (with the Sharp tool) a few months ago but I didn't mess in the system recently so I hope it will do.
Tomorrow I'll know if the Sharp backup and restore tool is efficient !

End of the crisis : reset to factory settings, restore of the backup and the Zaurus is back.
I don't know what happened, but I'm happy I could recover quite easily eventually.
I'll try X/Qt another day.

Bye !
