Pdaxrom, Firefox And Development Tools
« on: November 01, 2005, 04:22:53 pm »
- I have pdaXrom rc12 newly working on my 3100, but am wondering if anyone has got firefox working? Dillo formats pages really strangely. If available, where to get?
- Are there any feeds for pdaXrom besides the pdaXrom site?
- If I figure out how to get the developer tools working, will I be able to make my own from source or is there a particular reason it's not available? I've got the time and a free computer so compiling time is not an issue. I'm not a developer, but run gentoo. Is setting up the compiler a case of setting it up and then running make, make install to create an ipk file, or is there alot more to it? Is it like having to make an ebuild file?
- Is there a way in the package manager to simply update all programs, or do I have to manually compare available and installed version? How can I tell which files come from which feed?

There's a lot of feeds, but you should be able to get what you want by :
- setting up the one in the announcement-post of rc12
- adding : unstable [a href=\"http://www.pdaxrom/unstable]http://www.pdaxrom/unstable[/url]

In package manager (qpkg) select firefox (in "available" tab) and install it (gear-symbol).

upgrade all programs :
from command line :
# ipkg update
# ipkg upgrade
(I don't think there's any need for doing this on rc12 yet)

dev-tools :
Yes and no, it all depends, ...

Welcom and good luck,
Chero.

Not there, or in the SL-6000 feed. I have tried about 5 different firefox ipk files, including one I found in a feed called oldunstable.

So how well does firefox work in pdaXrom at this point (ie how stable and fast is it compared to opera in cacko)? I have postponed trying both pdaXrom and oz for the longest time since anytime people ask about browsers on the forums the answers seem to indicate that it's either difficult to install or it runs much slower. Now that new cacko is out but also people are saying all these good things about pdaXrom I can't decide which way to go (and would like to avoid repartitioning/flashing for both if i can avoid it - I would say I have read enough good things about pdaXrom to go with that - especially now that kopi/kapi are there - but the browser I'm still not convinced about).
Anyone can offer some opinions/advice I'd really appreciated it.

I have just installed pdaXrom. I started this thread because I couldn't find firefox in the 3100 pdaXrom feeds, but you have to prefix 'mail' to the front of other models' feeds. Then firefox is there. I have only run it for about 20 minutes, and so good so far.
I can't comment on speed vs. opera and cacko, but it might be quicker than running through the SharpROM and then X. I certainly gets me there quicker!
The stumbling blocks I found installing pdaXrom that took time to solve were the above, and:
1. Using a vfat partition is flakey. I made a single partition and formatted as ext3. Then things worked.
2. You have to edit the resolv.conf file, not count on using the gui.

I went straight from the sharp rom, and so far have successfully installed apache, php, kdepim and a bunch of command-line stuff. mysql installed successfully but I haven't run it yet.

What is annoying is the aterm applet doesn't work reliably (I just launch it from the tree), and I haven't figured out how to get the task bar to autohide. I would rather run fluxbox, but couldn't get the menus to work..

Now I really just want to compile my own software without having to rely on someone else's feeds (and give back) and then I'll be happy. If someone would comment intelligently to my original post regarding this, that would be really useful, I hope, for everyone.
