Can you flash Wince on Zaurus
« on: February 09, 2004, 01:23:41 pm »
ok ok ,,,... i know what you are thinking why would you want to do that? The thing is my bro got handed down my old sl-5500, he isn't linux familiar, more used to the Winxp interface. Apart from that he really wanted to play Age of Empire on the pda, and as far as i know its only released for wince. Could anyone tell me if this is possible? Is the proccess similar to installing OZ? Thanks a bunch.

Actually there are two possibilites, neither of them very likely:
1.) Flash the OS from a Pocket PC that has the exact same hardware configuration as the Zaurus.
2.) Buy a license from M$, and port Wince to the Zaurus yourself. Who knows, if you go this route, you might find you have a marketable product for those who want to downgrade their Zaurus.

I can only agree, Yuk is the right response. If Sharp would get off of their butts, and do some decent marketing of the Cxx series, Pocket PC and wince, would be just a glimmer in the rear view window.
Please Sharp (who I know are not listening).

Please don\'t flame me for this.
I tried flashing my Z with a modified Wince ROM, just out of curiosity, but it failed.
You know how it is, you have a spare afternoon, nothing on tv, you think what will waste my time.
Nothings better for wasting time than a M****soft product.

You can get an evaluation version of Microsoft\'s WinCE platform builder for under $20 (thats the tool all the pocket pc vendors use to put together their own roms).  The tool gives you a great deal of flexibility in building a WinCE image.  So yes, it would require some engineering effort, but probably no more than porting Linux to a new iPaq, and that process is starting to get streamlined.

To amplify what DrWowe answered: You can actually download the eval kit for free: That\'s the good news. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/evaluate/evalkit/default.aspx) The bad news is that the images you produce will stop working after 120 days.  The worse news is that a full toolkit (which you\'ll have to buy, since you are probably the first person to want to do this) will cost appx. $995 \"Suggested retail price\" (http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/howtobuy/xp/pricing/default.aspx). On the other hand, you can (theoretically) recoup some of that by selling licenses of your new, spiffy image to other people. (Of course, the price is based on how many licenses you sell...so that $995 might increase...). So...the short answer is still: Don\'t bother!

A wince wine-like emulator for the zaurus seems much more likely to come out for the Z to me  (and IMHO would be just as much of a waste of time)
Btw, wasn\'t Zaurus intended for Linux-unfamiliar users in the first place? Partly, at least, with all those Intellisyncs and the likes...Oh, and maybe your brother will actually like Strategic Assault(http://killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=14) as a compensation?

I had this problem once; I really wanted to play those neat PocketPC (legit or otherwise) games. So what I did was buy a slightly used Ipaq 1945 at eBay. Now I use my Z at work (only) and the Ipaq for play  I\'ve never been so happier ever since.
