do you absolutely have to use a CF card to change or upgrade the OS on the Zaurus?

Only Sharp ROMS have an installer in the cradle and only from Windows.  If you want to flash another ROM, the answer is yes, absolutely.
Handheld:. Sl-5500 tkcROM 1.0 (defunct) * apps on ext2 Lexar 256 SD
Desktop:. Mandrakelinux 10.2 Cooker * kernel 2.6.11
Both computers run linux, proud to be MS Free

that was great answer  thanx

one thing that\'s been puzzling me though is why the various Zaurus OS\'s are called ROMs. I thought ROM was a Read Only Memory, when you see to be able to write (\"flash?\") to this.

The later zauri can be flashed by sd card as well as cf card.

Certainly this include the cxx0 series, and possibly the sl5600 too.

the sl5500 and 5000 are definately cf only.
Zaurus cl760, cacko QT rom. Zaurus sl5500 with TKCrom 1.0.
512mb Kingston cf card, 256mb Sandisk sd card, Lexar 256mb sd card.
Bluemonkey bluetooth card <-> Sony Ericsson k700i for gprs.
Buffalo WLI-CF-S11G wifi card. Haicom 303 mmf gps cf/seral card.

5600 can be flashed from SD, it is only 5000 and 5500 that cannot...
